Ritz Rains On Emporia State Parade

No. 4 Bronchos Roll Past Hornets As Ritz Hits Two Homers, Throws Complete Game

HAYS, Kansas Terin Ritz received her MIAA Player of the Year award before Central Oklahoma's MIAA Softball Championship quarterfinal contest with Emporia State Thursday afternoon and then proceeded to prove it.

Ritz smashed two home runs, drove in five runs and threw a complete-game in the circle as the No. 4-ranked Bronchos cruised past the Hornets 8-1. UCO, now 44-8, will meet the Central Missouri-Missouri Southern winner in a noon semifinal Friday at Fleharty Family Field.

"We weren't as locked in as we should have been the first few innings and it took us awhile to get going," head coach Cody White said. "I thought we swung the bats well and it always helps when you get a couple of big flies.

"Terin showed why she's the best player in our league and I honestly think she's the best player in the country. She hit two bombs and pitched well on top of that. We also had good defense behind her, which always helps."

Ritz moved to 16-3 with her 90th career win. The senior standout scattered four hits, struck out four and didn't walk a batter in recording her 13th complete-game outing of the season.

It was a scoreless tie until the bottom of the fourth when the Bronchos took charge with a three-run outburst.

Kennedy Clark got things going with a one-out walk and Ritz followed with a first-pitch blast that just cleared the right field wall for a two-run homer. Ariah Mitchell had a two-out triple down the right field line and Mari Scott made it 3-0 with a single up the middle.

UCO broke the game open with a four-run volley.

Brooklyn Ryan was hit by pitch to lead off and Rylee Lemos doubled off the left-center field wall before Clark drove in the first run with a bloop single to left. Then Ritz crushed an 0-1 pitch over the flags in straightaway center field for a massive three-run blast to up the lead to 7-0.

Emporia scored its lone run in the top of the sixth and the Bronchos got that back in the bottom of the frame on Rylee Anglen's two-out triple that scored Macie Andrews, who walked to lead off.

Seven of UCO's 10 hits went for extra bases. Ritz moved into fifth place on UCO's single-season list for homers (17) and RBI (69) with her banner day at the plate.
