Central Drops Opener With MWSU

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma dropped the first of three MIAA games against Missouri Western with a 7-2 setback Thursday night at Wendell Simmons Field.

UCO is 31-15 on the year following the loss and 21-13 in the MIAA. The Bronchos are locked into the No. 4 seed for next week's MIAA Baseball Championship. Missouri Western (14-31, 12-22 MIAA) is in 10th place in the league standings, one game in front of Northeastern State. Ten teams qualify for next week's single elimination postseason tournament.

Grant Randall hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game, 1-1, and Caden Robertson hit a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh to cut the MWSU lead to 6-2. But UCO only managed five hits in the game. Robertson had two, adding a single later in the game. Ty Chapman and Ty Hammack also had base hits.

Brett Pense started for the Bronchos and threw 3.0 innings, giving up one run on three hits. Brady Gilmore threw 1.1 innings, and allowed two more runs on two hits.

Austin Burda got two outs to get UCO out of the fifth down 3-1, and Michael Lopez got a 1-2-3 sixth inning. But he gave up one run after a leadoff walk in the seventh. Caleb Burchfield gave up two runs on three hits without recording an out in the same inning.

Denton Whiteside got UCO out of the seventh and Gage Norvell recorded the final six outs, giving up one run on a pair of walks.

Central Oklahoma and Missouri Western will play Game 2 Friday at 2 p.m. Game 3 is scheduled for Saturday at 12 p.m., with a Senior Day ceremony preceding first pitch, and Alumni Day festivities during and after the regular season finale.
