UCO Tops Hays In Edmond

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma beat Fort Hays State 6-1 Friday in an MIAA dual played at Edmond Racquet Club due to rain.

The Bronchos improved to 10-5 on the season with the win and are now 6-2 in the MIAA. UCO concludes the regular season with a matchup against No. 23 Nebraska Kearney Saturday morning.

Central Oklahoma can be the No. 3 seed in next week's MIAA Women's Tennis Championship with a win over UNK Saturday morning. UCO will be the No. 4 seed with a loss.

Friday in Edmond, UCO's dominance in doubles play continued, propelling the Bronchos to a fourth straight win.

Anika Ouwejan and Nefeli Zafeiri teamed up for a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles and Pete Komada and Hui Soo won 6-4 at No. 2 doubles to earn the point. UCO also got a 7-5 win from Karyna Yurchenko and Maria Becaro at No. 3 doubles.

Central continued to overpower Fort Hays into singles play.

Komada won quickly at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-2, to make it 2-0 in the match.

Yurchenko made it 3-0 with a win at No. 4 singles, taking a 6-0, 7-5 victory. Ouwejan and Zafeiri kept it going with three-set wins. Ouwejan dropped her first set but won the match, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. Zafeiri dropped her second set but won the match, 6-4, 3-6, 6-0.

Fort Hays State got one point from No. 6 singles, where Becaro fell 6-0, 6-1. The Bronchos closed out the match with one more win at No. 5 singles, where Soo won 6-0, 7-5.

Central Oklahoma and Nebraska Kearney are scheduled to play at 10 a.m. Saturday at Broncho Courts on campus. It will be Senior Day for Zafeiri, who after Friday now has 82 career victories, including more than 50 in her three years with UCO.
