UCO Wins Third Straight In Fort Smith

Bronchos Beat UAFS 5-2, Finish Season At Home Next Week

FORT SMITH, Ark. – Central Oklahoma cruised to its second MIAA road win of the week and third straight overall with a 5-2 victory Saturday at new league member Arkansas Fort Smith.
 
UCO improved to 9-5 on the season with the win and 5-2 in the MIAA. The Bronchos conclude the regular season with Fort Hays State and Nebraska Kearney next weekend in Edmond.
 
The MIAA Women's Tennis Championship is scheduled for May 2-4 in Springfield, Missouri. The Bronchos are currently fourth in the league standings heading into the final week of the season. The top six teams make the single elimination tournament in two weeks.
 
Saturday in Fort Smith, after a one-hour rain delay, UCO got started with quick work of the Lions in doubles play. Central took all three positions. Nefeli Zafeiri and Anika Ouwejan won 7-5 at No. 1, but the others weren't close. Ayaka Koga and Pete Komada won 6-0 at No. 2 and Hui Soo and Karyna Yurchenko won 6-1 at the No. 3 spot.
 
UCO shuffled its lineup in singles play, with Marina Becaro and Brylee Toney making their collegiate debuts.
 
Komada played No. 1 and won 6-2, 6-0. Ouwejan won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2, Yurchenko won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3, and Soo won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4. That gave the Bronchos a 5-0 lead in the match. Fort Smith got its only two points from the newcomers at Nos. 5 & 6. Becaro lost 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles and Toney lost 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.
