Central Takes Series Opener Against NSU

Bronchos Beat Riverhawks 12-8 In Game 1; Series Continues In April

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma outlasted Northeastern State in a 12-8 victory for the Bronchos Wednesday afternoon in MIAA baseball at Wendell Simmons Field.

UCO improved to 21-8 on the season with the win and 11-6 in the MIAA. The Bronchos have won five in a row.

"We gave up a little too much, but it's always good when your offense gives you more," UCO head baseball coach John Martin. "We need to clean up some stuff with our bullpen, but at the end of the day we got the win and that's what matters."

Central Oklahoma scored 12 runs on 14 hits, including five home runs on Wednesday. The Bronchos jumped on NSU early, leading 2-0 in the first, 4-0 in the third, and then 5-0 in the fourth.

NSU fought back with two in the fifth, and then when it was 9-2 in the seventh, the visiting Riverhawks from Tahlequah scored five runs to make it a game.

UCO kept adding on its end though, with one more in the seventh and the final two in the bottom of the eighth to make it 12-8.

Caden Robertson went 4-for-5 with two home runs, five RBIs, and four runs scored. Ty Hammack, Orlando Gonzalez, and Joe Ricchio all hit homers too. Garrett Long added a double.

Gonzalez, Ricchio, Long, and Grant Randall all had two hits on the day. Ty Chapman and Hammack had one hit each.

UCO used nine pitchers in Wednesday's game. Caleb Burchfield got the start and threw 4 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits. He struck out three batters. Trent Gerber relieved him to get out of the fifth with one strikeout and Brady Gilmore pitched the sixth, striking out one more.

Michael Lopez and John Demcher both made an appearance in the seventh but did not record an out, then Gage Norvell came on and got one out. Denton Whiteside followed with two walks before Chase Yarger ended NSU's rally. He finished with 1 2/3 innings.

Valek Cisneros, who was in line to extend his all-time saves record before UCO added the last two runs in the eighth, came on to pitch the ninth. He got a groundout, struck out the next batter, and after hitting the third batter of the inning, got an unassisted putout on a groundball to end the game.

Central Oklahoma and Northeastern State will play two more games for their three-game series this season. UCO will travel to Tahlequah April 9 and host NSU April 23 to wrap up the series.

UCO continues an eight-game homestand with a three-game MIAA series against Newman this weekend. Friday's Game 1 starts at 5 p.m., Saturday begins at 2 p.m., and Sunday wraps it up at noon.
