Bronchos Win Opener Against Newman

Central Oklahoma Outslugs Newman 14-8 For Game 1 Win

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma used an eight-run inning to pull away from a pesky Newman Friday night in Game 1 of the three-game MIAA series at Wendell Simmons Field, where the Bronchos won 14-8.
 
Central Oklahoma improved to 22-8 on the season with the win and 12-6 in the MIAA. Newman is now 8-20 and 4-14. Game 2 is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, with the teams wrapping up the series Sunday at noon.
 
"Our offense found a way tonight," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "Our pitching gave up a little too much but the offense had their back and got us the win."
 
Caden Robertson hit his league-leading 18th home run of the season in the bottom of the first inning, then added a three-RBI double in the sixth, finishing 2-for-4 with six RBIs.
 
Orlando Gonzalez and Joe Ricchio both went 3-for-4 in the game. Gonzalez had a single, a double, and a triple and scored four runs on the day. Ricchio, who had two RBIs and one run scored, hit three singles.
 
Grant Randall and Robertson both had two hits. Matt Baughn had the only other hit for the Bronchos, a two-run home run in the fourth inning.
 
Roberston's two-run home run gave UCO a 2-0 lead in the first. Newman tied with a two-RBI double in the fourth, but Baughn's homer gave the Bronchos the lead once again, 4-2.
 
Newman made it 4-3 in the fifth, then briefly took the lead with a three-run home run in the sixth to go up 6-4.
 
Then the Bronchos had a big rally in store. Ricchio scored Gonzalez with an RBI single. Then Randall scored Ricchio to tie the game with an RBI single of his own. Davan Brady scored on a bases loaded wild pitch to put the Bronchos in front 7-6, then Robertson's three-RBI double made it 10-6.
 
Robertson advanced to third on the play and then scored on Ty Hammack's sacrifice fly to center field. Ricchio scored Gonzalez on an RBI single for the second time in the inning to give UCO a 12-6 lead.
 
Robertson got his sixth RBI with a sac-fly in the seventh, scoring Baughn. Gonzalez scored his fourth run on a Garrett Long groundout in the eighth.
 
Brett Pense got the start for Central Oklahoma on Friday and threw 4 2/3 innings. He allowed three runs on five hits. Brady Gilmore gout UCO out of the fifth, then gave up the lead before ultimately earning the win on the day. He allowed three runs on two hits and a walk in 1 1/3 innings of work.
 
Pense struck out seven batters on the day, a third of the 21 faced. Gilmore struck out three more. Denton Whiteside threw the seventh inning and struck out two batters. Brett McComas, Trent Gerber, and Brody Berlowitz all made appearances in the final two innings.
 
Central Oklahoma and Newman play at 2 p.m. Saturday in Game 2 of the series. The Bronchos and the Jets wrap it up Sunday at 12 p.m.
