UCO Sweeps Weekend In Arkansas

Central Oklahoma Goes 4-0 At Henderson State Invitational

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Central Oklahoma completed a sweep of all competition at the Henderson State Invitational Sunday with a 10-8 win over Southern Arkansas in the final game of the weekend.

The Bronchos (6-2) went 4-0 in Arkansas this weekend, beating host Henderson State 5-4 on Friday night and co-host Ouachita Baptist 14-0 on Saturday afternoon. UCO beat Southern Arkansas twice, 10-7 on Saturday night, and 10-8 on Sunday afternoon.

"It was a good weekend for us," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We probably gave up a little too much, but we were playing some good teams. Proud of the offense and proud of the guys for fighting and getting it done."

Caleb Burchfield improved to 2-0 on the season with a win on the bump. The senior right-hander threw 7.0 innings on Sunday and struck out three batters. He allowed four runs on four hits and a walk but got plenty of help from his offense to get the win.

Southern Arkansas came out swinging and got three of those runs in the top of the first inning. But a big response for UCO gave the Bronchos a 4-3 lead after the first.

With Carson Carpenter already on base, Caden Robertson hit a two-run home run. Ty Chapman hit an RBI double down the line to score Orlando Gonzalez, and then Garrett Casey added an RBI double to score Chapman and give UCO the lead.

SAU tied it in the third, but the Bronchos got the lead back in the fourth. Ty Hammack singled to center field and scored both Grant Randall and Robertson to make it 6-4.

In the eighth, Hammack had two runners in scoring position again and reached on an error by the shortstop. Randall and Carpenter scored this time and UCO had a 10-4 lead.

The Bronchos did give up a grand slam in the top of the ninth inning, but held off the Muleriders for the win.

UCO scored 10 runs on 10 hits. Randall, Carpenter, Robertson, and Hammack all had two hits. Chapman and Matt Baughn had one each.

John Demcher replaced Burchfield and got through the eighth inning in order, but he gave up two hits and a walk to load the bases in the ninth. Michael Lopez came on to try to get out of the jam and gave up the grand slam. Austin Burda then came on to get the final three outs.

Central Oklahoma returns home and is scheduled to face Colorado Christian for a four-game series at Wendell Simmons Field this weekend. The Bronchos will play Friday afternoon, twice on Saturday, and one more on Sunday afternoon.
