Bronchos Sweep Doubleheader With CCU

Central Oklahoma Beat Colorado Christian 3-1, 6-3, In Friday Twinbill

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma swept a doubleheader against Colorado Christian Friday afternoon in the first two games of a three-game non-conference series.
 
The Bronchos won 3-1 in the afternoon before taking a 6-3 victory in the evening.
 
"We played well in both games," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "There are some things we should have done better, we left too many runners on base, but overall, we did well, and we need to do it again tomorrow."
 
Central Oklahoma improved to 8-2 on the season with the two wins. The schools return Saturday morning for a 10 a.m. finale. A fourth game was scheduled for Sunday, but weather has canceled the end of the series.
 
Brett Pense pitched six innings in Game 1, striking out a career-high nine batters. The sophomore improved to 1-1 on the season. He gave up one run on six hits, but didn't walk a batter.
 
Valek Cisneros came on to get the save, striking out two batters in the seventh inning. He earned his third save of the season. He would also return in Game 2 and earned his fourth save of the season.
 
Carson Carpenter gave UCO a 1-0 lead in the third inning when he scored Grant Randall on an RBI groundout. Ty Hammack's solo homer in the fourth made it 2-0. Caden Robertson scored Carpenter in the fifth with an RBI single through the left side.
 
The Bronchos scattered five hits in Game 1.
 
In Game 2, Brady Gilmore got the start and tossed 3.0 innings, striking out six batters. He gave up two runs on three hits and held the lead when he was taken out of the game. Trent Gerber threw one inning of relief and picked up the win.
 
Dillon Dibrell got two outs in the fifth, and Austin Burda face two batters after that, but Brett McComas came on to finish the inning, and the sixth. Chase Yarger faced two batters in the seventh before Cisneros returned for the second time and got the save. He truck out two batters in Game 2.
 
UCO trailed 2-0 in the nightcap before a double steal by Hammack and Carpenter put the Bronchos on the board. Carpenter scored. With the bases loaded, Hammack and Orlando Gonzalez scored on a throwing error and UCO took a 3-2 lead.
 
A sac-fly by Matt Baughn scored Brooks Miller later in the same inning to make it 4-2.
 
Gonzalez slapped a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring Robertson on the play, and giving UCO a 6-2 lead.
 
CCU added one in the fifth, but couldn't get closer.
 
Central Oklahoma and Colorado Christian will play Saturday at 10 a.m. The Bronchos are scheduled to visit Washburn for a three-game MIAA series next weekend.
