No. 25 UCO Sweeps Two Games

Bronchos Down Missouri S&T and Southern Nazarene On Final Day of UCO/OC Classic

EDMOND – Sydney Ward and Terin Ritz had complete-game pitching outings as No. 25-ranked Central Oklahoma swept a pair of games Saturday afternoon on the final day of the UCO/OC Classic.

Ward went the distance in a 10-2 five-inning run-rule romp of Missouri S&T in the opener and Ritz followed with a 3-0 shutout of No. 20 Southern Nazarene at Gerry Pinkston Stadium. The Bronchos improved to 7-1 on the young season with the sweep.

"Our pitching and defense was much better today," head coach Cody White said. "We didn't do a lot offensively but took advantage of the opportunities we had and came out with two good wins."

Ward picked up her first win in a UCO uniform against the Miners. A senior transfer who won 57 games during a stellar career at Southern Arkansas, the hard-throwing right-hander scatted six hits while striking out seven and walking one.

Ritz did the bulk of the offensive work in that contest, tying a single-game school record with two triples while driving in four runs and adding two stolen bases.

S&T took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first but the Bronchos answered back to grab the lead for good.

Rylee Lemos drew a lead-off walk and moved to third on consecutive outs before Ritz walked. Ritz then swiped second and Kennedy Clark drove both runners in with a single up the middle.

UCO broke the game open in the second with a five-run outburst.

Brooklyn Ryan started a one-out rally with a walk, Lemos had a bloop single to center and Rylee Anglen laid down a perfect bunt single to load the bases. Emily Deramus walked to force in the first run, then Ritz cleared the bases with a triple off the right field wall.

Ritz ended up stealing home to complete the big inning and push UCO's advantage to 7-1.

The Miners scored their final run in the top of the third and Central came back with three in its half of the inning.

Anglen started things with a double to left field and the speedy junior raced around to score on a throwing error on the play. Deramus reached on another S&T miscue, Ritz followed with an RBI triple to center and Clark's run-scoring groundout made it 10-2.

Ward put the Miners down in order in the final two innings to finish off the rout.

Ritz gave up five hits against SNU while striking out three. She didn't walk a batter and retired 11 straight during one stretch in improving to 2-1.

The Bronchos scored the only run it would need in the first. Lemos opened the inning with an infield single, Ritz drew a two-out walk and Clark came through with an RBI hit up the middle.

UCO made it 3-0 in the second. Mari Scott kept the inning alive with a two-out single to center field, Ryan reached on an infield hit and Lemos plated both with a double down the left field line.

SNU threatened only once, that coming in the sixth when the Crimson Storm loaded the bases with two outs but Ritz got out of the inning with a lazy fly ball to Ryan in center field.

Lemos had two of UCO's five hits in the contest.

The Bronchos are back home again next weekend, hosting five games in the Raising Cane's Festival.
