UCO Opens 2025 With Win Over Arkansas Tech

Bronchos Win 5-1 In Non-Conference Dual In Edmond

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma opened the 2025 season with a 5-1 victory over Arkansas Tech Friday evening at Edmond Tennis Center.

The Bronchos won the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3, then picked up four more wins in singles competition to put away ATU in the opener.

"We played well," UCO head women's tennis coach Joe Vann said. "It was a long day with weather, but we stayed focused and got the job done."

The match was scheduled for 3 p.m. but delayed to 5 p.m. due to weather, then the final match, No. 5 singles, was suspended due to more weather-related issues.

Central Oklahoma sophomores Ayaka Koga and Anika Ouwejan won 6-2 at No. 2 doubles and Karyna Yurchenko and Hui Soo won by the same score at No. 3 doubles. In between the two matches, Arkansas Tech picked up a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles over UCO's Nefeli Zafeiri and Pete Komada.

In singles play, Yurchenko was the first to finish with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at the No. 6 position to give UCO a 2-0 lead in the match. Arkansas Tech got on the board with a win at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-0, over Komada.

UCO had it from there.

Koga won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 4 singles, Ouwejan won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, and Zafeiri won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles to give UCO a 5-1 lead.

Soo dropped the first set, 6-4, but won 6-1 in the second before the suspension.

Central Oklahoma returns to the courts next week for a triple header. The Bronchos host No. 16 Angelo State, Harding, and Augustana for three matches in three days in Edmond Feb. 14-16.
