Central Oklahoma Ends Classic With Shutout Victory

UCO Beat East Central 7-0 Monday Night In The Final Game Of The Edmond First Pitch Classic

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma wrapped up the season-opening Edmond First Pitch Classic Monday night with a 7-0 victory against East Central at Wendell Simmons Field.

UCO is 2-2 following the 9-team, 14-game festival to open the 2025 season. The Bronchos responded after dropping their first games with back-to-back wins Sunday and Monday.

"We'll take this weekend and learn from it," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We're happy we got the last two and we'll learn from the first two and try to get better. We've got a big weekend ahead of us and we need to keep up the momentum we gained Sunday and Monday."

UCO lost Missouri – St. Louis (3-0) Friday night and Metro State Denver (1-2) before knocking off Southeastern Oklahoma State (0-3) and East Central (0-3).

Monday's matchup with ECU had the makings of a pitcher's duel early on. Central Oklahoma starter Caleb Burchfield threw five shutout innings, allowing only three hits. ECU managed one in the first, third, and fourth innings, but by the fifth inning, Burchfield was striking out his fourth batter of the night and heading to the dugout with a 1-0 lead.

UCO needed one trip through the lineup to get its first run of the game. Ty Chapman got UCO's first hit of the game with a triple in the bottom of the third inning and Carson Carpenter followed him with an RBI single through the right side.

Central Oklahoma used three relievers to finish what Burchfield started. Trent Gerber made his UCO debut, allowing just one hit while also striking out four batters in two innings of work. Tristan Wittau threw the eighth and struck out two batters and Brody Berlowitz threw the ninth and struck out two batters as well.

UCO took the 1-0 lead into the seventh inning when one swing of the bat turned in two runs. Caden Robertson led off the inning with a single up the middle, then Garrett Long smacked a two-out pitch way over the fence in deep right center field to give the Bronchos a 3-0 lead.

Central Oklahoma had a five-run eighth inning on Sunday night in its win over Southeastern Oklahoma State. Monday against East Central, the Bronchos put up four runs in the eighth, and it all came with two outs.

Hammack reached on an error, then stole second. Luke Stout reached on a second error. After Robertson drew a walk, Drake Lee did too. Hammack scored the first run of the rally to make it 4-0.

Matt Baughn was hit by a pitch that scored Stout. And then came Long again with a two-RBI single to score Robertson and Lee and make it the final, 7-0.

Central Oklahoma hits the road next weekend to take on three Arkansas schools with four games in the Henderson State Invitational. UCO plays HSU on Friday. The Bronchos will play across the street against Ouachita Baptist Saturday, then back at HSU against Southern Arkansas Saturday night. Central Oklahoma wraps up the weekend next Sunday with a second meeting with Southern Arkansas.

The Bronchos are back in Edmond again Feb. 14-16 when UCO hosts Colorado Christian in a four-game series.
