UCO Rallies, Tops Henderson State

Bronchos Win 5-4 Thanks To Ninth Inning Comeback

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Central Oklahoma won its third straight game Friday with a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over Henderson State on the second day of the HSU Invitational.

UCO improved to 3-2 on the season with the win. The Bronchos play Ouachita Baptist and Southern Arkansas Saturday, and finish up the festival Sunday with a second meeting against Southern Arkansas.

"The guys did a good job of fighting till the end," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "They got on us in one inning, but we didn't let that dictate the rest of our day. Our guys did a good job of responding and coming back."

Central Oklahoma trailed 4-3 heading into the ninth inning before a late rally helped the Bronchos.

Brooks Miller made his UCO debut in a pinch-hit leadoff spot and made the most of his opportunity by driving a solo home run out of the park to tie the game, 4-4. Grant Randall followed with a one-out double, then stole third base. When Ty Hammack hit a ball to shortstop, an error allowed him to reach safely and Randall to score the game-winning run.

Valek Cisneros came on to pitch the ninth and struck out the first two batters before issuing a walk. He struck out the next batter to end the game and earn the save. It's the 20th career save for Cisneros, who is just the second pitcher in school history to reach that mark.

Carson Carpenter hit his first home run of the season with one out in the top of the first inning to give UCO a 1-0 lead.

After Henderson State rallied in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-1 lead, Carpenter scored again in the sixth on another HSU error. Hammack stole second on the play but the Henderson catcher's error allowed Carpenter to score to make it 4-2.

Caden Robertson hit an RBI single in the eighth to score Hammack and make it 4-3. Then the Bronchos rallied in the ninth for the win.

Carpenter finished 3-for-5, Hammack was 2-for-4. Randall's double in the ninth was hit only hit of the game. Robertson's RBI single in the eighth was his only hit of the game. Miller's solo homer in the ninth was his only hit of the game. Orlando Gonzalez also had one hit.

Brett Pense got the start for the Bronchos and the sophomore All-MIAA right-hander struck out six batters in 3 2/3 innings of work. Pense took a 1-0 lead into the fourth before the HSU rally.

Brody Berlowitz came out of the bullpen in relief and threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Michael Lopez also threw 1 2/3 innings and struck out two batters. Andrew Talburt picked up the win. He pitched the eighth and got a 1-2-3 inning before handing the ball to Cisneros in the ninth.
