Central Oklahoma Tops Harding

Bronchos Win 4-2 In Non-Conference Tennis Dual At Edmond Center Court

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma got back in the win column with a 4-2 victory over Harding Saturday evening at Edmond Center Court.

The Bronchos are now 2-1 on the young season following the win.

"It's good to rebound from Friday's loss," UCO head women's tennis coach Joe Vann said. "We talked about finishing the job and we did today. Harding is a good team and this was a good win for us."

Central Oklahoma got a 1-0 lead in the match thanks to wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. UCO sealed the match with wins at No. 2, No. 4, and No. 6 singles.

Pete Komada and Nefeli Zafeiri won 7-6 (7-5) in a tight battle at the No. 1 position. Ayaka Koga and Anika Ouwejan won 6-3 at No. 2. Harding picked up a win at No. 3 doubles, with Hui Soo and Karyna Yurchenko falling 7-5 at that spot.

In singles play, Komada won 2-6, 6-2, 7-6, at the No. 2 spot. Koga won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4, and Yurchenko won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 to clinch the match.

Zafeiri lost in three sets at No. 1 singles. The senior lost the first set 6-2, but rebounded with a 6-4 win in the second. Harding took the third set 6-1 to get one of its two points.

Ouwejan conceded the other Harding point at No. 3 singles. The sophomore lost 7-6, 6-1. Soo's match at No. 5 singles was abandoned once Central won the match.

UCO was also scheduled to play Augustana this weekend for a third match in three days, however, weather forced the first two matches indoors and Augie did not make the trip to Oklahoma. That match is being rescheduled.

Central Oklahoma will now hit the road next weekend for a trip to Arkadelphia, Arkansas. The Bronchos will take on Ouachita Baptist on Saturday afternoon and Henderson State on Sunday morning.

UCO also visits Southeastern Oklahoma State (Feb. 28) before returning home again. The Bronchos next home match is Dallas Baptist, on March 2.
