Central Just Misses Upset Of ASU

Bronchos Fall 4-3 To No. 16 Angelo State In Non-Conference Dual

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma narrowly missed an upset of No. 16 Angelo State Friday evening as the Bronchos fell 4-3 to the former Lone Star Conference rival.

The Bronchos won the doubles point, but only found two wins in singles play.

"We just fell short," UCO head women's tennis coach Joe Vann said. "We need to learn to finish what we started. This would've been a big win for us, but we need to regroup and get ready for the next one."

Central Oklahoma is 1-1 following the loss. The Bronchos are scheduled to face Harding Saturday evening at Edmond Center Court.

UCO built an early 1-0 lead with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The Bronchos got a 6-4 win from Ayaka Koga and Anika Ouwejan at No. 2 doubles, then a 6-3 win by Karyna Yurchenko and Hui Soo at No. 3 doubles.

In singles competition, Pete Komada got UCO a win at No. 2, 6-0, 6-2, and Koga also won at No. 4, 6-3, 6-0. Unfortunately for the Bronchos, that was it for this match.

Nefeli Zafeiri lost 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Ouwejan lost 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, and Soo and Yurchenko both lost at the No. 5 & 6 spots. Soo dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision and Yurchenko fell short, 6-1, 6-3.
