Indoor Season Opens Saturday In Topeka

Bronchos Begin Winter Season At Washburn Alumni Invitational

TOPEKA, Kan. – Central Oklahoma begins Indoor Track & Field season Saturday with Washburn University's Alumni Invite, an all-day event with 48 men's and women's teams and more than 750 participants.

The Bronchos will send 12 student-athletes to compete in seven total events.

"We're ready to get started," UCO head women's track & field coach Gus Schmader said. "The girls have been working all fall to get to this point and they're ready to see where they measure up against some good competition."

Seniors Reta Ojene and Faith Millner, juniors Deriayah Lee and Mikayla Stephenson, and sophomore Tyana Hymes are returning letter winners competing this weekend.

Sophomore transfers McKenna Huston and Zakeirah Johnson will make their UCO debuts, and five freshmen – Maya Conrad, Jaelynne Knighton, Tori McIntosh, Charis Phillips, and Chyanne Williams will also make their collegiate debuts Saturday.

Lee and Hymes are set to compete in the 60-meter hurdles prelims Saturday afternoon. Johnson, Williams, Stephenson, and Knighton will all compete in the 60-meter prelims.

UCO's biggest contingent will be the 200m Saturday evening. Johnson, Stephenson, Ojene, Huston, Williams, Conrad, Knighton, and Hymes will all compete for the Bronchos.

Lee, Huston, Conrad, Phillips, Ojene, and Hymes are all competing in the 400m, and Lee, Millner, and McIntosh are set to run in the 600-yard event.

Phillips is UCO's only field competitor this weekend. She'll compete in the triple jump Saturday afternoon.

The Bronchos will have two 4x400m relay teams competing. Ojene, Lee, Conrad, and Huston make up one squad, and McIntosh, Millner, Phillips, and Stephenson make up the other.

Central Oklahoma gets the season started Saturday but will break for the holidays after that. UCO will return Jan. 16 and will be back in Topeka for Washburn's Rust Buster event.
