Bronchos Ready For Rumble In The Jungle Friday

Central Oklahoma Competing At Pitt State In MIAA Meet

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Central Oklahoma continues a busy Indoor season with the Rumble in the Jungle Friday at Pittsburg State.

UCO is sending 15 student-athletes to the MIAA meet. The Bronchos will have a trio of field athletes competing alongside a dozen tracksters.

"We have had a couple of good meets so far this month and we're looking to continue that momentum this week," UCO head women's track & field coach Gus Schmader said. "It's going to be tough competition, but this is where we have to measure ourselves. We're excited to see how we do."

Abigail Kelly (shot put), and Mattison Thetford and Talyn Been (pole vault) will represent UCO this week. Kelly, a sophomore, threw a PR 11.91m in the shot put two weeks ago to take first place at Friends University's First Chance Qualifier in Wichita, Kansas. Thetford and Been both cleared 3.15m last week at OU, and finished second and third.

Genevieve Young is entered in the 600-yard race and is on hand to help with the 4x400 relay teams. Maddie Gaxiola (800m) and Asia Williams (mile) are also scheduled to run middle distance.

Deriayah Lee, who won the 60-meter hurdles at OU last week, is entered in the same event along with Tyana Hymes for this Friday's meet. Lee clocked a 9.04 in December at the first Indoor meet of the season. She is also entered in the 60m, 400m, and 4x400m. Hymes is scheduled to race in the 60-meter hurdles, 200m, and 4x400m.

Mikayla Stephenson and Karly Clemons are also entered into the 60-meter dash along with Lee. Stephenson will return for the 200m and the 4x400m. Faith Millner is also scheduled for the 400m and the 4x400m relay.

Four Bronchos, Sai Brookins-Flemming, Treasure Vallerie, Kerrigan Huynh, and Reta Ojene, are all scheduled to compete in the 200m, the 400m, and 4x400m relays.

Vallerie won the 200m at OU (25.53) and finished third in the 400m (1:00.29) in the season debut for the sophomore All-American. Brookins-Fleming won the 60m (7.79) in Wichita and finished second in the event (7.84) last week at OU. She also won the 400m (59.68) in Wichita. Huynh has in the last two weeks put together five Top 10 finishes including a PR in the 60m in Wichita with a time of 7.87 seconds.

Central Oklahoma is competing at Pittsburg State this weekend and will return there Feb. 14-15 for PSU's Russ Jewett Gorilla Classic. The Bronchos are heading to Topeka, Kansas for the Washburn Open Feb. 1.
