Bronchos Wrap Up Fall Schedule At ITA Regionals

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma wrapped up the ITA Regional Championships Saturday at Edmond Center Court, highlighted by Nefeli Zafeiri's quarterfinals appearance in the Singles A Draw.
 
The Bronchos had six individuals compete, with five in the Singles A Draw and another in the B Draw. For doubles play, all three teams for the Bronchos were in the A Draw.
 
Festivities began Friday and went well for the Bronchos in the morning session before four of five A Draw players dropped out in the Round of 32.
 
Zafeiri got the day started with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Jenna Bohnert of Henderson State. In the Round of 32, Zafeiri got her second win with a 6-2, 6-4 over Nicole Bono from Newman.
 
Saturday, Zafeiri returned for the quarterfinals, but fell short 2-6, 3-6, to Johanna Priedite of Missouri Western.
 
Freshman Hui Soo beat Emporia State's Giovanna Ferreira 3-6, 6-3, 10-5 to advance to the Round of 32. She would drop the next match to Northwest Missouri's Laura Prieto Sieiro, 3-6, 2-6.
 
Junior veteran Pete Komada, who has spent much of her first two seasons with the Bronchos in the national rankings, won her first match of the day on Friday. Komada beat Angela Georgieva of Henderson State, 6-3, 6-4. In the Round of 32, Komada lost to Augustana's Smilte Bakyte, 4-6, 6-3, 7-10.
 
Sophomore Anika Ouwejan had a similar day, taking her first match of the day in straight sets. She beat Amishi Shukla of Southeastern Oklahoma State, 6-0, 6-2. But in the Round of 32, Ouwejan lost 3-6, 2-6 to Nebraska Kearney's Narindra Ranaivo.
 
Karyna Yurchenko was the fifth Broncho in the A Draw and beat Augustana's Simon-Maria Karaouza 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 to advance. In the Round of 32, Yurcheko fell short 6-7 (5-7), 2-6.
 
Sophomore Ayaka Koga won her first match in the B Draw, 6-1, 6-0, over Sioux Falls' Katelyn Nesheim. Like most of her A Draw teammates, Koga dropped the next match in the Round of 32. Koga lost 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 8-10 to Polina Gontaryk from Northwest Missouri.
 
Friday evening, UCO's doubles contests began. Ouwejan and Soo teamed up and picked up a 9-8 (9-7) win over Northeastern State's Tegan Heaton and Sofia Kotliarova. On Saturday, similar to singles play, the duo lost in the next round. In the quarterfinals, Jou Chen and Larissa Giraldi Correa of Southeastern beat Ouwejan and Soo, 8-6.
 
Zafeiri and Komada won 8-2 in their opener Friday, but fell 8-6 on Saturday to Ana Zeikidze and Mariana Jimenez of Newman.
 
Koga and Yurchenko also teamed up and also won Friday in the opening round. The duo picked up an 8-4 win over Irina Alfonso and Suzana Faucz of Fort Hays State. On Saturday, the duo lost 8-6 to Karli Roux and Alexia Zarate Valdez from Harding.
 
Central Oklahoma wrapped up the fall portion of its schedule with the ITA Regional Championships. The Bronchos will return in January for the spring season.
