Streaking Bronchos Ready For MIAA Tourney

Central Oklahoma Tees Off In 2024 MIAA Men's Golf Championship Monday

KANSAS CITY, Mo.  Central Oklahoma looks to extend its winning streak this week when the Bronchos head to the 2024 MIAA Men's Golf Championships this week.

UCO has won three straight team titles heading into the three-day, 54-hole tournament at the 7,011-yard, par-71 Shoal Creek Golf Course, with 10 teams vying for the league title. First-round play tees off at 9 a.m. Monday, followed by Tuesday's second round and Wednesday's final round.

Joining the Bronchos in the field will be defending champion Rogers State, Central Missouri, Fort Hays State, Missouri Southern, Missouri Western, Newman, Northeastern State, Lincoln and Washburn.

UCO will be looking for its fourth MIAA championship, having previously won the title in 2013, 2016 and 2017.

"We've had a really good year and have played exceptionally well the last month or so," said head coach Derrick Thompson, whose team has five runner-up finishes, three wins and two third-place showings in 10 tournaments in 2023-24. "It should be a great tournament and our guys are looking forward to the opportunity.

"Shoal Creek is a tough course that will certainly test us and the rest of the field."

UCO will take six players to the tournament under a new conference rule that allows substitutions each day, though an individual must play in all three rounds in order to compete for individual awards.

Making the trip for the Bronchos will be Bennett Baldwin, Baylor Bostick, Nick Canales, Dylan Henderson, Kyle Hickey and Jordan Wilson.

Wilson leads the team with a stellar 71.07 scoring average. A midseason transfer, the Edmond native has placed in the top six in all five spring tournaments with a trio of runner-up finishes.

Canales sports a 71.7 average with six top-20 finishes, including one win. The junior from La Porte, Texas transferred to UCO before the start of the fall semester and is returning to the lineup after missing the past two tournaments with injury.

Bennett is coming off a championship showing in Central's last event at the Shangri-La Showdown, finishing at 10-under-par 202 for his second collegiate win. The junior from Stillwater has six top-20 finishes in eight tournaments this year with a 72.08 average.

Henderson has competed in nine of UCO's 10 tournaments this year and has a 72.74 average. The junior from Canada has five top-20 finishes, including three top 10s.

Hickey takes a 73.33 average into the league tourney, while Bostick is at 73.85. A senior Rochester, Minn., Hickey has three top-10 showings in five events, while Bostick – a freshman from Duncan has been in the top 20 four times this year.
