Tennis Drops Second Match In Mississippi

Central Oklahoma Went 1-2 On Sping Break Road Trip

CLINTON, Miss. – Central Oklahoma dropped its second match in as many days Wednesday with a 6-1 loss against No. 8 West Alabama at Mississippi College.

The Bronchos, 4-4 on the season, fell at MC in a tough one-point setback on Tuesday before dropping Wednesday's non-conference match with UWA.

UCO got behind 1-0 Wednesday after the Tigers from Livingston, Alabama won all three doubles matches 6-2. Blythe Buntrock and Pete Komada are ranked No. 26 in the country in the latest ITA Doubles Top 50 released earlier Wednesday. The duo lost to 12th-ranked Hardija Vidnere and Shaira Rivera, 6-2.

Nefeli Zafeiri and Ayaka Koga lost at No. 2 Doubles to 45th-ranked Heden Ly and Khim Iglupas, and Karyna Yurchenko and Anika Ouwejan lost at No. 3 Doubles, both by the same 6-2 score.

Iglupas is also ranked No. 7 in Wednesday's ITA Singles Top 75. She beat 56th-ranked Komada 7-5, 7-6 (7).

Buntrock was named MIAA Women's Athlete of the Week Wednesday afternoon, but the senior fell short 6-2, 6-0 in her matchup at No. 2 Singles.

Zafeiri lost 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 Singles, and Ouwejan lost 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 Singles.

Yurchenko and Koga both played three sets again on Wednesday. Yurchenko won 6-4 before a 3-6 loss forced the third. She lost 10-5 in the tiebreaker at No. 4 Singles. Koga also won 6-4 to start things off at No. 6 Singles, then lost 6-0 in the second. She won the third set 6-3, which earned UCO's only point of the day.

Central Oklahoma won its 2024 Spring opener in Edmond before embarking on a nine-match road trip. UCO is 3-4 during the last seven weeks away from home. The Bronchos play Missouri Western next weekend in the ninth and final game of the road swing before returning to home the following weekend against Fort Hays State.
