Bronchos, Wilson In The Lead At Oak Tree

Central Oklahoma Surges To The Front After Two Rounds In Oak Tree Invitational

EDMOND – Jordan Wilson fired a sizzling 5-under-par 65 in the second round to seize the individual lead and put Central Oklahoma atop the team leaderboard after first-day play in the Oak Tree Invitational Monday.

Wilson shaved 11 shots off his opening-round score in finishing the day with a 1-over 141 total at the 7,116-yard, par-70 Oak Tree Country Club East Course. He's one shot ahead of Texas-Tyler's Seth Campbell heading into Tuesday's final round, which starts at 9 a.m.

The Bronchos own a 12-shot advantage in the team race. UCO shot a morning 300, then knocked 20 strokes off that with an afternoon 280 in finishing the day at 580.

Oklahoma City is second in the 17-team field at 592, followed by Midwestern State (596), West Texas A&M (597) and Oklahoma Christian (600).

"It was rough this morning with the cold and the wind, but I was really proud of the way we bounced back in the afternoon," head coach Derrick Thompson said. "Scoring conditions were really tough and our guys hung in there."

The Bronchos prospered on a day when scoring average for the 98-player field was 78.23, with three other UCO starters joining Wilson in the top 10.

Bennett Baldwin (76-70) is tied for sixth, while Dylan Henderson (73-74) and Nick Canales (75-72) are tied for 10th. Evan Griffith added rounds of 79-73.

Central also had two players competing as individuals, with Kyle Hickey field for third after shooting 73-70 while Baylor Bostic shot 77-72.

Wilson who finished second and fourth in UCO's first two spring tournaments had a triple bogey and double bogey in his first-round 76, but rebounded in impressive fashion.

The junior transfer started play on No. 5 and parred his first three holes in the afternoon before making three birdies in a four-hole stretch. He got to 5-under with birdies on the par-3 14th and par-4 15th, offset his lone bogey of the round with a birdie on the par-4 first and then finished with three straight pars.

Hickey was 4-over through five holes in the morning before playing the final 13 holes 1-under in opening with a 73. The senior made four birdies against a double bogey and two bogeys in his afternoon 70.

Baldwin had a couple of early birdies in getting to 2-under after eight holes in the second round before dropping back to even with a double bogey. He was 1-over through 14 holes, but finished with a birdie and three pars for his even-par round.
