Bronchos In The Lead At Midwest Classic

UCO Scores 16 Bonus-point Wins, Advance Six To Quarterfinals

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – No. 2-ranked Central Oklahoma pushed six individuals into the quarterfinals to seize a narrow lead after first-day action in the 45th Midwest Classic Friday.

The Bronchos went 23-5 with 16 bonus-point wins on the day and finished with 51.5 points, giving them a two-point lead over No. 3 Wisconsin-Parkside. No. 4 McKendree is third with 46 points, followed by No. 20 Pittsburgh-Johnstown (45.5) and No. 19 Colorado Mesa (44.5).

The huge 43-team tournament resumes at 8:30 a.m. Sunday and will run to its conclusion.

Making the quarterfinals for the Bronchos were 125 Studd Morris, 133 Peter Rolle, 141 Dylan Lucas, 149 Dylan Brown, 157 Gabe Johnson and 184 Garrett Wells, while 165 Hunter Jump, 197 Emmanuel Skillings and Hvy Paul Sharp are still alive in the consolations.

"We had a pretty good day," head coach Todd Steidley said. "We lost a couple of tough ones, but we scored a lot of bonus points and that's always a plus in a tournament like this.

"There's still a long way to go and we have to come out tomorrow ready to go."

Rolle, Johnson and Wells each went 3-0 to lead the Bronchos on the first day.

The top-ranked Johnson scored three bonus wins, following a first-round fall with a technical fall and a major decision. The fifth-rated Wells had a pair of technical falls on the day and Rolle scored a second-round fall.

Morris, Lucas and Brown each followed first-round byes with two wins in making the quarters. Morris and Lucas breezed into the round of eight with two bonus wins, with Brown following a tough second-round win with a technical fall.

Jump and Skillings earned first-round byes and then won their second-round matches before losing, but both bounced back to win their opening consolation bout. Sharp fell in the first round, but stayed alive with three straight consolation wins.
