Bronchos Finish Second In Kansas

TOPEKA, Kan. – Central Oklahoma came up just short of securing its third tournament win of the fall season with a runner-up finish in the 15-team Washburn Invitational that concluded Tuesday.

The Bronchos started final-round play at the 6,901-yard, par-71 Topeka Country Club trailing MIAA rival Missouri Western by two shots and stayed there as the two teams both shot closing 286s. The Griffons won the two-day, 54-hole tournament with a one-over-par 853 total, while UCO was second at 855 and Concordia-St. Paul third at 862.

"We weren't very good on the par-5s this week and that cost us," head coach Derrick Thompson said. "Our guys battled hard, but we just didn't make enough birdies. We were in it until the end and came up a little short."

Bennett Baldwin and Baylor Bostick led UCO on the final day with even-par 71s. Dylan Henderson and Jordan Wilson carded one-over 72s, while Nick Canales and Karsten Paciotti had 73s. Paciotti competed as an individual medalist in the event.

Bostick had the low finish in the tournament for the Bronchos, tying for fourth with a one-under-par 212 total. Baldwin tied for sixth a shot behind at even-par 213, Wilson was ninth at 214 and Henderson tied for 11th at 216.

Bostick started his final round on No. 1 and got off to a slow start with a double bogey. He was three over after five holes before rallying.

The sophomore ripped off six straight pars before making three birdies in his final six holes. He finished birdie-birdie to cap off the comeback that resulted in an even-par round.

Baldwin also started on No. 1 and made birdie there before dropping back with a double bogey on No. 3. He made five straight pars and birdied the par-4 ninth to make the turn at even-par 35.

The senior All-American was a model of consistency on the back nine, parring every hole to close out his final-round 71.

Wilson birdied his first hole of the day, the par-4 second, and then made 11 consecutive pars before giving a shot back on No. 14. The senior All-American closed with four pars and a bogey for his 72.

Henderson double bogeyed his second hole of the day on No. 5, but got a stroke back on the par-4 seventh and then offset a bogey on No. 12 with a birdie on the par-5 15th in also shooting 72.

The Bronchos, with two wins and a runner-up showing to their credit, wrap up the five-tournament fall schedule next Monday and Tuesday at the Dallas Baptist Classic in Rockwall, Texas.
