Nick Canales Named MIAA Men's Golfer of the Week

Freshman Honored After Record Performance

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – After a record-setting day on the course, University of Central Oklahoma redshirt freshman Nick Canales was named MIAA Men's Golf Athlete of the Week presented by T-Shotz, the league announced Wednesday.

Canales won the MSSU Men's Fall Invitational Tuesday. He posted a new UCO record for a 54-hole tournament, shooting a 198. He's the first player in school history to shoot under 200 through 54 holes. His 18-under-par is also a new record for 54 holes.

Canales also tied the UCO record for a single round on Tuesday afternoon. In the third and final round of the tournament, Canales fired a 10-under-par 62. Both are equal to the best marks in school history (Todd Dayton, 2005-06).

Canales, a La Porte, Texas native, playing in just his second career tournament and first in the lineup with the Bronchos, sank 20 birdie putts this week at Shangri-La Country Club. He had 10 in his first two rounds and then 10 more on his big final round. Canales also had 29 pars and one eagle on the week.

Central Oklahoma has finished second and third in two tournaments this season. The Bronchos are scheduled to hit the course again next week at Southwestern Oklahoma State's Perkins Invitational at Prairie West Golf Club in Weatherford, Oklahoma.
