Dorrel, who is from Maryville, Missouri, attended his hometown Northwest Missouri State University where he played football. After graduation, he immediately began his coaching career in a graduate assistant role. After brief stops as an assistant coach at Dakota State (South Dakota) and William Jewell, Dorrel was hired as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Northwest, in 2004.

There he was part of a staff that led Northwest to five consecutive national championship appearances, winning the fifth in 2009. In 2011, Dorrel became the head coach of the Bearcats and immediately began assembling one of the best coaching resumes in football. Dorrel led his alma mater to three national championships (2013, 2015, 2016) and went 15-0 in each of those seasons. Dorrel has been named the American Football Coaches Association National Coach of the Year three times.

Dorrel moved on from Northwest following the 2016 season to take a head coaching position at Abilene Christian but would make his return to Division II after five years there.

He was hired at the University of Central Oklahoma in December 2021, and has spent the past two years working on building upon the legacy of the Edmond school and contributing to its 650-plus wins, the fourth-most in Division II history. Dorrel has a 102-47 career record as a head coach.
