Bronchos, Mustangs, Agree To Three-Year Series

Central Oklahoma And Midwestern State To Meet In 2027, 2028, 2029

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma announced Tuesday a future non-conference football agreement with Midwestern State, setting up the Bronchos with games in 2027, 2028, and 2029, and finalizing non-conference competition for the next four seasons.

UCO will travel to Midwestern State in Wichita Falls, Texas in 2027 before hosting the Mustangs in Edmond in 2028. The teams will meet for a third time in 2029 back in Wichita Falls.

"I'm really excited for this Midwestern State series," UCO Vice President for Athletics Stan Wagnon said. "It's a no brainer. There's good football in Texas, so testing ourselves against Lone Star Conference competition is a tremendous challenge and opportunity. But when you add in the fact of Wichita Falls being 65 miles closer to Edmond than our closest conference football opponent, this is the type of non-conference scheduling that moves the needle for Division II football. Coaches, players and fans are craving for opportunities to prove how their team stacks up, but we don't often have the resources to trek across the country. These games give UCO and the MIAA a chance to measure ourselves without traveling too far to do it."

Central Oklahoma's non-conference schedule is complete for the next four seasons. The Bronchos will play at Texas Wesleyan and Central Arkansas in 2026, then host TWU and visit MSU in 2027. In 2028, UCO begins a two-year deal with West Texas, traveling to Canyon following its home game against MSU. And in 2029, the Bronchos will host WT after traveling to Midwestern State.

"It's a relief and huge blessing to have our non-conference scheduling completed for the next several years," Wagnon said. "Some of the credit goes to changing regions to where the MIAA and Lone Star are aligned again, and there's a renewed interest for games with the teams in Texas. But it's also a testament to the program Coach Dorrel is building and the reputation that Central Oklahoma is a formidable opponent in Division II football."

UCO and Midwestern have met eight times on the gridiron with MSU owning a marginal 4-3-1 record in the series. The first two meetings came in 1951 and 1954, both in Wichita Falls. A three-year schedule from 1999-2001, twice in Texas and once in Edmond, and again from 2008-10, twice in Edmond and once in Texas, make up the all-time series history.
