Rowing Debuts On The Water Saturday In OKC

OKLAHOMA CITY – Central Oklahoma opens the 2023 season Saturday morning with a handful of races on the Oklahoma River, with three Division I schools making the trip to face the Bronchos.

Central Oklahoma will race Oklahoma, Tulsa, and Kansas State in two rounds of racing Saturday morning. Both Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ boats will be on the water.

"We expect our season opener to be a tough round of racing for the Broncho women," first-year UCO head women's rowing coach Jen Gilbert said. "With nearly half the team still battling or out with illness and non-rowing related injuries we are only able to boat a Varsity 8 and 4. Although some of our key contributors will be on the sidelines this weekend almost the entire team set new PRs during mid-February testing, so the coaching staff are confident we are on track speed-wise.

"The Varsity 4 will be a very young boat with three sophomores and two novices, so the amount of experience they'll get will surely set them up for future success," Gilbert said. "The Varsity 8 will have four first-years racing but they're chomping at the bit to show what they can do. In training they have certainly been throwing out the challenge to our Varsity members, showing they are very much in contention for a championship seat come final trials. It's an exciting time to be a Broncho – the Boathouse atmosphere is electric and they're hungry for success. This weekend is just one step in our Spring campaign."

UCO's Round 1 V8+ lineup features a mix of veterans and newcomers. Graduate transfer Sydney Large will be the coxswain for the eights. Sinead Quirke, Keyna Swoosh, Danielle Holle, and Kenna Chamlee are all in the lineup and returners from last season's national qualifying squad. Samantha Hutchings, Raphaela Sanchez, Victoria Petschnig, and Lauren Clark all join the group.

Central Oklahoma will use Macie Cohlmia to lead the fours in the first round. Cambree Jones, McKenna Passini, Anya Landrowski and Allie Schein make up the lineup. Nearly the same group will take on Round 2, with Isabel Brown subbing in for Jones in the bow seat.

When the Bronchos come out for Round 2 in the eights, Emily Overholt will sit in the coxswain seat. Peyton Meiler will also move into the three seat.

UCO is making its season debut Saturday morning. The Bronchos raced twice in the Fall season at the Head of the Oklahoma and at Tulsa. Central Oklahoma finished fifth at the 2022 NCAA Division II Championships.
