Busy Weekend Set For Broncho Baseball

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma is back on the field this weekend with a busy slate of games scheduled at Wendell Simmons Field.

UCO will play Southern Nazarene Thursday at 3 p.m. before beginning a four-game series over three days this weekend against the University of Mary of Bismarck, North Dakota.

Central Oklahoma is 3-0 on the season after picking up a weekend sweep of the competition at the Edmond First Pitch Classic last weekend. UCO was supposed to play its first midweek of 2023 on Tuesday against SNU. That game was first postponed to Wednesday afternoon, then again to Thursday.

"We know it'll be a busy weekend, but we're just ready to be out there and get our guys a chance to play," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "The guys are ready to be back out there and we'll see what we can do this weekend."

UCO will start its series with Mary Friday at 3 p.m., then play a doubleheader Saturday at 1 & 4 p.m. before wrapping up the series Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Bronchos got off to a good start last weekend with a strong mix of pitching and hitting. UCO's pitching staff has a 2.08 team earned run average after allowing eight runs – six earned – in the first three games of the season. Central struck out 32 batters in three games and opponents hit .148 against the Bronchos with 13 hits last weekend.

Offensively, Central Oklahoma scored 29 runs in three games. The Bronchos are hitting .365 with 38 hits. Noah Olson, Seth Gray and Cameron Uselton each had six hits on opening weekend. Jaden Parsons had four and four more Bronchos had three hits in the first three games. Central also had 19 extra-base hits including 14 doubles and four home runs.

Seth Gray and Orlando Gonzalez both had two homers on opening weekend.

Southern Nazarene is 1-2 after the first weekend of play in 2023. The Crimson Storm dropped their home opener against UCO's MIAA counterpart, Newman last Friday, 14-7. SNU then beat Newman 7-4 in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday. Southern Nazarene would fall 23-12 in the second game.

This weekend will be the first competition of the season for Mary, which was picked fourth in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Preseason Coaches' Poll.
