Bronchos Open Indoor Season With Success At OU

Central Oklahoma Earned Nine Top-Five Finishes Including Two Wins Saturday In Norman

NORMAN, Okla. – Central Oklahoma opened its 2023-24 Indoor Track & Field season Saturday at the J.D. Martin Invitational and saw several top performances at OU's Mosier Indoor Facility.

Sai Brookins-Fleming, a freshman from Mesquite, Texas, made her collegiate debut in style with three top-five finishes. Brookins-Fleming won the 200-meter race and finished third in the 400. She also was the first position in UCO's 4x400 relay team that captured a fourth-place finish.
 
Brookins-Fleming ran the 200 in 25.77 seconds. She crossed the finish line in the 400 in 59.90 seconds. The Broncho relay team finished the 4x400 in 4:02.92.
 
Mattison Thetford also picked up a first-place medal on Saturday. The sophomore from Moore, Oklahoma finished first in the pole vault with a height of 3.25 meters (10 feet, 8 inches). The mark is a career high for Indoor for Thetford.
 
Talyn Been, also a sophomore, finished second in the pole vault. The Dewar, Oklahoma native hit 2.85 meters (9 feet, 4 1/4 inches).
 
Genevieve Young, a junior from Cache, Oklahoma, also picked up a second-place finish. The distance runner and cross country squad member finished second in the 800 meters on Saturday. She crossed the finish line in 2:24.39. Young was the anchor of the 4x400 relay team that finished fourth on Saturday.
 
Jakayla Swanson, a freshman from Muskogee, Oklahoma, earned a third-place finish in the 200 meters. She finished the race in 26.18 seconds, just 0.41 behind Brookins-Fleming. Swanson was the third leg of the 4x400 relay team that finished fourth, and she also competed in the 60-meter dash Saturday and finished seventh with a time of 7.77 seconds.
 
Kerrigan Huynh, a freshman from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, finished fourth in the 400 with a time of 1:00.79, just 0.89 seconds behind her teammate Brookins-Fleming. Huynh also finished fourth on the relay team as the second leg of that group. She finished sixth in 200 with a time of 26.73 seconds.
 
Dahsauni Lyday, the veteran of the program, finished fifth in the shot put with a 13.21-meter toss. The senior from Wagoner, Oklahoma also threw 14.14 meters in the weight throw for a ninth-place finish.
 
Mikayla Stephenson, Reta Ojene, Deriayah Lee, and Karly Clemons also competed in multiple events this weekend. The quartet teamed up in the 4x400 as UCO's second team and finished eighth with a time of 4:22.20.
 
Stephenson, a freshman from Broken Arrow, finished 12th in the 200 (27.17 seconds) and 21st in the 60-meter dash (8.08 seconds). Ojene, a sophomore from Oklahoma City, finished ninth in the 400 (1:04.53) and 15th in the 200 (27.57 seconds). Lee, a freshman from Muskogee, finished seventh in the 60-meter hurdles (9.45 seconds) and 11th in the 400 (1:05.26). And Clemons, a freshman from Cushing, Oklahoma, added a 14th-place finish in the 400 (1:07.69).
 
Distance runners Noel Buckhaults and Kylee Smith also competed. Buckhaults, a senior from Hooker, Oklahoma, finished 11th in the 3,000 meters with a time of 12:39.03, and 14th in the Mile with a time of 6:11.57. Smith finished 19th in the Mile with a time of 6:51.20, a personal best for the sophomore from Byng, Oklahoma.
 
Kelsey Drapeau, a senior from Elgin, Oklahoma, also competed and finished 12th in the long jump with a distance of 4.78 meters (15 feet, 8 1/4 inches). Abigail Kelly, a freshman from Edmond, finished 12th in the shot put with a distance of 10.40 meters (34 feet, 1 1/2 inches). Lauren Wilson, a freshman from OKC, competed in the weight throw but did not score.
 
Central Oklahoma will break for the holidays before resuming Indoor season in January. The Bronchos are scheduled to compete in four meets in January and February. The 2023 MIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships are scheduled for Feb. 23-25 in Topeka, Kan.
