Nikki Boyar and Blythe Buntrock Win ITA Central Region Doubles Title

EDMOND – Nikki Boyar and Blythe Buntrock are headed to the ITA Cup following a win at this weekend's ITA Regional Championship at Edmond Center Court.

The duo, already 8-0 this Fall, posted five straight victories this weekend to take the regional crown and punch their ticket to nationals.
 
The 2022 ITA Cup is scheduled for Oct. 13-16 in Rome, Georgia. Boyar won a regional title her sophomore season in 2019 and finished with a national quarterfinals appearance.
 
Boyar and Buntrock won their regional opener on Friday, beating Southeastern's Sara Gonzalez and Chiara Matteodo, 8-2. On Saturday, the duo won a pair of matches to reach the semifinals. Boyar and Buntrock beat Chiara Camelutti and Freia Lawrence of Northeastern State, 8-5, and Casie Curyy and Maja Jung of Washburn, 9-8 (7-5).
 
Sunday the duo beat Augustana's Senem Ocal and Florentia Hadjigeorgiou in the semifinals with an crushing 8-1 victory to secure a spot in the final.
 
Washburn's Sonia Smagina and Lara Schmid waited for the Central duo but didn't present a challenge Boyar and Buntrock couldn't handle.
 
UCO won the first set, 6-1 and followed with a 6-4 victory in the second set to clinch the title.
 
Eight regional champions and eight at-large selections will descend on Rome, Georgia in two weeks in hopes of winning the ITA Cup. Boyar, with Paola  Landin, won the 2019 title. Mae  Canete and Christine  Canete won last year's regional title and also took the national championship at the ITA Cup.
 
UCO had a busy weekend in the ITA Regional that included a 64-person A Singles Draw.
 
Pete Komada won her first two matches to reach the Round of 16 before falling there. Tizia Brocks, Buntrock, and Karyna Yurchenko all won their opening round matches before losing in the Round of 32.
 
Taylor Conway also won her first match in the 53-person Singles B Draw.
 
Conway, with Lexi Penn, also made the B Doubles Draw semifinals. The duo won 8-3 over Newman's Divya Murali and Lauren Esfeld before winning 8-5 over Southern Arkansas' Sarah Roy and Annika Berrendorf.
 
Conway and Penn lost 8-3 to Nebraska Kearney's Clare Plachy and Alexis Bernthal in the semifinals.
