Men's Golf

Bronchos In Indiana For Regional Tourney

The Central Oklahoma men's golf team will be in Noblesville, Ind. for the NCAA Division II Central/Midwest Regional Tournament that starts Thursday.

The 20-team, 54-hole tournament was scheduled to be held over a three-day span, but expected rain in the area has forced a change in the format. Thirty-six holes will be contested Thursday, followed by the final 18 holes either Friday or Saturday, depending on the weather.

"Our guys have been working hard and we're ready to go," first-year head coach Derrick Thompson said. "It's a loaded field and a tough golf course, but I'm excited to see what we can do. We've made a lot of improvement during the course of the year, which has been fun to see."

Six difference conferences are represented in the Central/Midwest Regional, with teams from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, the Great American Conference, the Great Midwest Athletic Conference and the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference all represented.

A minimum of three teams and two individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the Championship Finals, which are set for May 16-20 in Detroit, Mich. Three other regional tournaments are being held around the country this week.

The Bronchos – who have finished in the top four in five of 11 tournaments this year -- will be represented by juniors Kyle Hickey and Evan Griffith, sophomore Caleb Kimmel and freshmen Liam Coughlin and Bennett Baldwin. UCO is making its first regional appearance since 2018.

Griffith and Kimmel have played in all 11 tournaments this year. Griffith carries a team-best 73.61 scoring average and has seven top-25 finishes, while Kimmel is at 74.26 with six top-25 showings.

Hickey has a 74.92 average and top-25 finishes in five of nine events. Baldwin is at 74.96 with four top-25s in 10 tournaments and Coughlin is at 76.09 with three top-25s in eight meets.
