Central Oklahoma Wins Third Concsecutive MIAA Women's Tennis Championship

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma claimed its third straight MIAA Women's Tennis Championship Sunday morning with a quick 4-0 victory over Missouri Western at Edmond Center Court.

The Bronchos, winners of the 2019 and 2021 postseason championships, won all three matches in the 2022 tournament by the same score of 4-0.

"The girls played determined today," first-year head tennis coach Joe Vann said. "There was a little bit of a lull in the middle of the match and we let up just a bit, but the girls did a great job of finishing and they can now say they're champions."

Central Oklahoma finished runners-up in the 2018 MIAA championship but has won eight consecutive matches since then to claim a third straight title.

Sunday morning, the Bronchos cruised to a 4-0 win in less than two hours.

Mae Canete and Christine Canete, the No. 1 ranked doubles team in the country, won 6-1 at the No. 1 doubles position. Adel-Byanu Abidullina and Tizia Brocks, ranked No. 31 in the country, won 6-4 at No. 2 doubles to give Central Oklahoma the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead in the final.

As play turned to singles, three of those four moved quickly to clinch the title.

Abidullina won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles in 53 minutes. Christine followed suit with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles in 56 minutes. And less than a minute later, Mae won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1 singles to give Central Oklahoma the 4-0 lead and the championship.

Central Oklahoma is now 19-1 on the season following Sunday's win. The Bronchos earned the MIAA's automatic qualifier to the 2022 NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship as well. UCO will learn its postseason fate with the NCAA Selection Show scheduled for Tuesday, May 3 at 8:30 p.m. (ET).
