Bronchos Cruise Past Lincoln

COLUMBIA, Mo. (April 9) – Three Central Oklahoma pitchers threw 11 shutout innings and Shayla Harper smacked a home run in both games as No. 10-ranked Central Oklahoma cruised past Lincoln in a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader Saturday afternoon.

Kylee Lynch tossed a two-hitter in a 9-0 first-game romp that ended after six innings, while Isie Cox and Bailey McKittrick combined for a one-hitter in a 13-0 five-inning second-game drubbing. Harper belted a grand slam in the opener, then added a two-run shot in the nightcap.

The Bronchos improved to 32-6 on the season and 11-1 in the conference in stretching their winning streak to five. UCO moves on to Warrensburg, Mo. Sunday to take on Central Missouri in a 12 p.m. twinbill.

"Our pitchers really threw well today," head coach Cody White said. "It took us a little while to get going offensively, but we came up with some big hits. It's good anytime you can get two wins on the road and hopefully we can keep it up tomorrow."

Lynch dominated in the circle in the opener, finishing with a career-high 10 strikeouts in her 14th complete-game outing of the season. The sophomore left-hander allowed just two base-runners, giving up singles in the first and third innings in improving to 16-1.

Lincoln kept the Bronchos at bay the first three innings before one Harper swing put UCO in control.

Korbyn Skipworth, Mattie Lee and Mikayla Rutland drew walks to set the stage for Harper, who made it 4-0 with a long drive to center field for her seventh homer of the year.

The Bronchos scored their other five runs in the sixth, with back-to-back singles by Harper and Brighton Gilbert getting the inning started. Tarin Dubler followed with an RBI double, then Jacee Minter and Skipworth added two-run singles to make it 9-0.

Lynch put the Blue Tigers down in order in the bottom of the sixth to close out the run-rule rout.

UCO finished with 10 hits, getting two apiece from Harper, Skipworth and Brighton Gilbert.

The Bronchos didn't waste time in the second game, taking a 1-0 lead in the first when Harper led off with a single, stole second, went to third on Dubler's base hit and scored on Minter's sacrifice fly.

UCO broke the game open in the third with an eight-outburst, highlighted by Harper's two-run blast. Lexy Dobson had a two-run single, while Shayleigh Odom added an RBI single and Amelya Huggins a run-scoring fielder's choice.

Dobson and Odom delivered RBI singles in the fourth to up the lead to 11-0 and Brooke Niver's pinch-hit two-run homer – the first of her collegiate career – ended the scoring in the fifth.

Cox went the first four innings, giving up just a third-inning single along with one walk in moving to 9-3 on the season. McKittrick pitched a 1-2-3 fifth to close out the contest.

Harper, Dobson and Odom had two hits each to pace a 10-hit attack.
