Bronchos Reap Several League Honors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The MIAA announced Thursday its annual postseason awards and Central Oklahoma can begin looking for a new trophy case.

Mae Canete was named MIAA Player of the Year. Christine Canete was named MIAA Freshman of the Year. And Joe Vann was named co-MIAA Coach of the Year.
 
UCO also had four First Team All-MIAA selections in Singles competition and two First Team All-MIAA selections in Doubles. Plus, one Second Team All-MIAA and one Honorable Mention for Singles and one Honorable Mention for Doubles.
 
"It's great for the team to be recognized for their work this season," Vann said. The first-year head tennis coach added, "They've put in so much work from the offseason, through the fall and winter, and this spring they've been great. They deserve it."
 
Vann was named co-Coach of the Year after leading Central Oklahoma to its second consecutive MIAA regular season championship with an 8-0 record. The Bronchos are 17-1 overall and begin postseason play on Friday morning.
 
Mae was named MIAA Player of the Year following a standout sophomore season. She was the league's freshman of the year last season and posted a 15-2 record in 2022. She was named First Team All-MIAA at No. 1 Singles in addition to her individual award.
 
Christine was named MIAA Freshman of the Year following a stellar debut for the Bronchos. She joins her sister, and three other Bronchos in the last five years, to win the award. Christine went 13-1 in 2022 with her only loss a medical forfeit. She was named First Team All-MIAA at No. 2 Singles.
 
Adel-Byanu Abidullina, who is a two-time MIAA Player of the Year herself, was named First Team All-MIAA at No. 3 Singles after posting a 15-0 record in 2022.
 
Grace Chadick also earned First Team All-MIAA at No. 4 Singles after the freshman posted a 12-5 record in her first season with the Bronchos.
 
Mae and Christine together also earned First Team All-MIAA at No. 1 Doubles and Abidullina, with Tizia Brocks, were named First Team All-MIAA at No. 2 Doubles.
 
Brocks was also named Second Team All-MIAA at No. 5 Singles.
 
Blythe Buntrock was named Honorable Mention All-MIAA at No. 6 Singles and she and teammate Nikki Boyar were named Honorable Mention All-MIAA at No. 3 Doubles.
 
Central Oklahoma begins the postseason Friday morning with the 2022 MIAA Women's Tennis Championship. UCO is hosting the eight-team tourney at Edmond Center Court and the Bronchos open as the No. 1 seed and are scheduled to take on eighth-seeded Northeastern State on Friday at 10 a.m.
