Skipworth Sparks Bronchos To Sweep Of FHSU

HAYS, Kan. (April 23) – Korbyn Skipworth smacked three home runs, including a grand slam, to spark No. 4-ranked Central Oklahoma to a doubleheader sweep of Fort Hays State Saturday afternoon.

The freshman outfielder had two homers in a 19-2 first-game trouncing, then led a big fifth-inning uprising that carried the Bronchos to a come-from-behind 8-3 second-game victory. Skipworth entered the day with one homer and 16 RBIs on the season and finished it with four homers and 24 RBIs.

UCO reached the 40-win mark for the ninth time in school history and the sixth time under ninth-year head coach Cody White with the sweep. The Bronchos are now 41-7 overall and 20-2 in league play.

"We swung the bats well today and came out with two good wins," head coach Cody White said. "We got things going early in the first game, but it took us a while to get untracked in the second one. Korbyn really came up big for us today."

UCO scored early and often in the opener in nearly setting a trio of team single-game records.

The Bronchos finished with 18 RBIs, tying the record set in a 21-5 rout of Southern Nazarene in 2015. The five homers was the second-most, trailing the record of six against Sioux Falls in 2016, and the 19 runs tied the fourth-most.

Skipworth's first homer was a three-run shot to left field in the top of the first and Amelya Huggins contributed an RBI single as UCO jumped on top 4-0, then the Bronchos added a six-run volley in the second.

Brighton Gilbert got the onslaught going with a run-scoring infield single, Jacee Minter had a two-run double two batters later and Huggins followed with a two-run homer – her ninth – to left-center before FHSU made a pitching change.

Skipworth greeted the new pitcher with her second homer in two innings and it was a 10-0 cushion.

Tarin Dubler got in on the long-ball act in the third, following Gilbert's two-out walk with her first homer of the season to make it 12-0 and the Bronchos pushed across seven two-out runs in the fourth.

Lexy Dobson got that late rally started with her fourth homer of the year, a solo drive to left field. Dubler chipped in a two-run double, Terin Ritz had a two-run pinch-hit single and Gilbert an RBI walk as the lead grew to 19-0.

The Tigers scored their only two runs in the bottom of the fifth to arrange the final margin.

Dubler and Skipworth both had two hits and four RBIs to lead an 11-hit attack, while Huggins and Odom also had two hits each.

Kylee Lynch started and went the first four innings to pick up the pitching win. The sophomore gave up three hits and didn't walk a batter in improving to 21-1.

The Bronchos trailed 3-1 through four innings of the nightcap before erupting for seven runs in the top of the fifth to take control.

Consecutive singles to open the inning by Shayleigh Odom, Mikayla Rutland and Harper loaded the bases, with Gilbert's single to left field plating the first run.

Minter's one-out two-run single to right-center put UCO in front, then Huggins walked to load the bases again for Skipworth. The freshman came through with her fourth dinger of the day, this one a no-doubt shot to center field for the grand slam that gave the Bronchos an 8-3 lead.

That ended up being the final as Lynch came on the throw the final 4 1/3 innings to pick up her second win of the day. She allowed three hits and one run while striking out four in moving to 22-1.

UCO wraps up the regular season next weekend, going to Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern for back-to-back doubleheaders.
