UCO Splits On The Road At Pitt State

PITTSBURG, Kan. (April 30) – Lexy Dobson and Shayla Harper combined for seven hits and six runs batted in to spark Central Oklahoma to an 11-1 second-game drubbing of Pittsburg State as the No. 4-ranked Bronchos split a Saturday afternoon doubleheader.

The Gorillas scored four sixth-inning runs to pull out an 11-7 victory in the first game before UCO rebounded for the emphatic rout in the nightcap. Harper went 4-for-4 with two RBIs, Dobson was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and each smacked a home run in leading a 12-hit attack.

UCO, now 42-8 on the season and 21-3 in the conference, wraps up the regular season Sunday with a 1 p.m. twinbill at Missouri Southern.

The Bronchos lost a chance to tie for the regular-season league title with the split and Washburn's sweep of Emporia State. The Ichabods finished 24-2 in conference play to clinch the MIAA championship, with their lone losses coming to UCO on March 12.

"Pitt State has a good hitting team and they really showed that in the first game," head coach Cody White said. "It was important that we responded the right way, so I was proud of the way we came back after that loss.

"It's disappointing we can't win the conference, but we just have to focus on the two games tomorrow and then get ready for next week."

The Bronchos will host the eight-team MIAA Postseason Tournament May 4-7 at Gerry Pinkston Stadium. UCO will be the No. 2 seed and open the double-elimination tourney Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. against seventh-seeded Nebraska-Kearney.

PSU broke on top in the first inning of the second game with an unearned run, with the Bronchos tying it in the second when Dobson led off with a double down the right field line and scored on Mikayla Rutland's one-out single to center field.

It remained a 1-1 deadlock until the fourth when a four-run outburst put UCO in control.

Dobson started the inning with a single and Shayleigh Odom was hit by pitch before both advanced on Rutland's sacrifice bunt. Dobson scored the first run on a passed ball that put Odom on third.

Harper walked to keep things going, then Brighton Gilbert drove in Odom with a groundout before Tarin Dubler and Amelya Huggins added RBI singles to make it 5-1.

The onslaught continued in the fifth when Rutland drew a two-out walk and Harper followed with her ninth homer of the season, this one a drive to left field.

The Bronchos put the finishing touches on the rout in the sixth. Jacee Minter, Huggins and Korbyn Skipworth walked to load the bases for Dobson, who promptly cleared them with a big fly to left field for her sixth homer of the year.

Isie Cox went the distance in the circle to pick up the pitching win. The sophomore scattered seven hits and allowed one unearned run while walking one and striking out three to improve to 10-4.

UCO got a two-run homer from Minter and a solo shot by Dobson in building an early 5-1 lead in the opener, but the Gorillas scored once in the bottom of the third and five times in the fourth to go up 7-5.

The Bronchos rallied in the sixth to tie it. Harper reached on a fielder's choice resulted in the second out of the inning, then Gilbert and Dubler had back-to-back singles before Minter delivered a two-run double.

PSU answered back in the bottom of the frame, launching a pair of two-run homers to grab an 11-7 lead and that's how it ended.

Minter, Gilbert and Skipworth had two hits apiece to lead a 10-hit attack, with Minter also driving in four runs.
