No. 6 UCO Handles No. 10 Cameron

LAWTON, Okla. – Central Oklahoma had to overcome more than one hurdle to get its final non-conference match of the season in this week but the Broncho result didn't change.

Central Oklahoma 6, Cameron 1.

Central began its match with Cameron Tuesday afternoon in blustery conditions in southwest Oklahoma. After the Bronchos won the doubles point, and singles play had begun, rain forced the suspension of the match. The two schools decided to postpone the remainder of the competition until Wednesday.

Central Oklahoma then departed campus in route to Lawton when the van carrying the Bronchos had a flat tire. UCO finally made it to Cameron University a little behind schedule and could finally resume play.

From there it was all Bronchos.

Mae Canete, who was named MIAA Player of the Week earlier Wednesday, gave UCO a 2-0 lead shortly after the match resumed with a win at No. 1 singles. Canete is ranked No. 3 in the country and she beat No. 55 Vasilisa Polunova, 6-2, 6-2.

Blythe Buntrock made it 3-0 with a 6-1, 7-5 victory at No. 6 singles.

Adel-Byanu Abidullina followed her with a match-clinching win at No. 2 singles. Abidullina, who is ranked No. 25 in the country in the ITA Singles Top 75, won 7-6, 6-3 to give UCO a 4-0 lead and its ninth consecutive win.

Christine Canete also picked up a win at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-2 and Grace Chadick won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4 singles.

Cameron picked up its only point at No. 5 singles with a 7-6, 6-4 win over Tizia Brocks.

The Canete sisters, ranked No. 1 in the country in the latest ITA Doubles Top 50, locked up a win at No. 1 doubles on Tuesday with a 6-2 victory over No. 25 Anastasia Uspenskaia and Magda Wawrowska.

UCO's No. 44-ranked doubles team of Abidullina and Brocks won 6-4 at No. 2 doubles and Central's No. 48-ranked duo of Boyar and Buntrock won 7-5.

Central Oklahoma looks to wrap up the 2022 regular season on a high note this weekend. The Bronchos are now 15-1 overall this season and are 6-0 in the MIAA. UCO can lock up its second consecutive MIAA Championship with two more wins this weekend when the Bronchos travel to Northwest Missouri (Saturday) and Washburn (Sunday). The latter is also 6-0 in league play this season.
