Defending Champion Bronchos Ready For MIAA Tourney

Central Oklahoma will be looking to pull off a second straight sweep of the team and individual titles later this week at the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Women's Golf Championships in Newton, Kan.

The Bronchos won their fourth MIAA team title since joining the league in 2013 and Susana Olivares was the individual champion last year at Hillcrest Country Club in Bartlesville, Okla.

This year's three-day, 54-hole event starts Thursday and concludes Saturday at the 6,087-yard, par-70 Sand Creek Station County Club.  Joining UCO in the 11-team field is Central Missouri, Northeastern State, Rogers State, Northwest Missouri, Newman, Missouri Western, Nebraska-Kearney, Lincoln, Fort Hays State and Missouri Southern.

The champion earns an automatic berth into the NCAA Division II Central Regional Tournament, which is set for May 2-4 in Hot Springs, Ark.

"There are a lot of good teams in the conference and it should be a really close race," said head coach Michael Bond, who has led the Bronchos to all four MIAA titles. "We played pretty well at this course a couple of weeks ago and hopefully learned some things from that. We're looking forward to having a good tournament."

UCO was runner-up at the Newman Invitational held at Sand Creek Station April 4-5, finishing one stroke behind Rogers. It was the seventh top-four finish in nine tournaments for the Bronchos, who have won two titles.

Set to take the course for UCO this week is senior Kinsley Hall, juniors Madison O'Dell and Taylor Towers and sophomores Susana Olivares and Mika Ramos.

Olivares has been outstanding all year and carries a sensational 73.74 scoring average. She's been in the top-12 in eight of nine tournaments with five top-five finishes.

Olivares cruised to a four-shot win in last year's league tournament, finishing with a 223 total.

Towers owns a 76.0 average in three tournaments, having placed in the top 25 each time. Ramos has a 78.0 average and has been in the top-25 in five of nine tournaments, including a fourth-place showing at the Newman Invitational two weeks ago.

Hall has a 78.47 average with four top-20 finishes in seven tournaments, while O'Dell carries a 78.79 average in nine events and is coming off a season-best 11th-place finish at the Newman Invitational.
