UCO Grounds Jets

EDMOND (April 2) – Shayla Harper had four hits and five runs batted in to spark an offensive assault that carried Central Oklahoma to a doubleheader sweep of Newman Saturday afternoon at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.

The No. 19-ranked Bronchos had 20 runs and 21 hits on the day. UCO collected 11 hits in a 10-4 first-game victory – scoring all 10 runs with two outs -- before rolling to a 10-2 run-rule romp in the nightcap behind a 10-hit attack.

Central improved to 30-6 on the season and 9-1 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play with the sweep. It's the 17th time in the 48-year history of the program the Bronchos have reached the 30-win mark, including the eighth in nine years for head coach Cody White.

"We got off to a slow start, but finally got things going and ending up having a good day," said White, now 331-130 for his career. "Newman can really swing it, so I thought we kept them somewhat contained and our offense was clicking pretty good."

The Jets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the opener and UCO didn't manage its first base-runner until the third when Mikayla Rutland drew a two-out walk. She stole second and scored on Harper's line-drive double to center field to make it 2-1.

The Bronchos went ahead 4-2 in the fourth behind Mattie Lee's two-run double and Lexy Dobson's RBI single, then Newman scored twice in the fifth to tie it.

UCO took charge in the sixth with a big six-run outburst, with the key hit a two-run double by Rutland that broke the deadlock. Harper followed with a first-pitch home run that bounced off the top of the wall in left field, Jacee Minter added an RBI single and another run scored on an error to make it 10-4.

Kylee Lynch closed out the complete-game win in the circle, improving go 15-1. She gave up seven hits and three earned runs while striking out five and walking one.

Harper went 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Minter also had two hits.

The Bronchos didn't waste time in the second game, jumping on top 2-0 in the first on run-scoring hits by Tarin Dubler and Amelya Huggins.

UCO answered a Newman score in the second with Dubler's RBI single, then made it 5-1 in the third as Rutland drew a bases-loaded walk and Harper followed with a sacrifice fly.

The Jets made it 5-2 in the top of the fourth and the Bronchos responded by pushing across five runs in their half of the inning.

Lee had another two-run double to key the outburst, while Huggins, Harper and Korbyn Skipworth added RBI base hits as the lead grew to 10-2.

Bailey McKittrick came on to pitch the fifth and complete the run-rule victory. Isie Cox earned the win, giving up five hits in the first four innings, improving to 8-3.

Harper, Dubler, Huggins, Skipworth and Lee had two hits apiece to lead the offense.

UCO hits the road next weekend, going to Missouri for MIAA doubleheaders against Lincoln and Central Missouri.
