Bronchos Finish Fourth In MIAA Tourney

TOURNAMENT RESULTS

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (April 19) –
Central Oklahoma had a trio of top-20 individuals in finishing fourth at the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Men's Golf Championships that wrapped up Tuesday.

The Bronchos shot a final-round 299 in ending the two-day, 54-hole tournament with an 896 total at the 6,752-yard, par-72 WinterStone Golf Course. Rogers State came in at 875 to run away with the title in the 10-team tournament, followed by Central Missouri (891), Missouri Southern (893) and UCO.

Evan Griffith and Kyle Hickey both shot 74 to lead the Bronchos on the final day. Bennett Baldwin closed with a 75, while Liam Coughlin shot 76 and Caleb Kimmel 77.

Kimmel placed fifth in the individual standings with a 220 total. Griffith tied for 18th at 227 and Coughlin was 20th at 228.

"We didn't play as well as we needed to," head coach Derrick Thompson said. "I thought our guys fought hard and hopefully we will get another chance to play this season."

UCO will find out Friday if it will earn an at-large berth into the NCAA Division II Central Regional Tournament, which will be held May 5-7 in Noblesville, Ind.

Kimmel, who started the day tied for the lead, got off to a slow start and was four-over-par after five holes. He ripped off nine straight pars, then offset a bogey on No. 15 with a birdie on the par-5 16th before bogeying his final hole for a 77.

The sophomore made 36 pars for the tournament and the fifth-place finish was his second-best of the season.

Griffith bogeyed the first hole, then got that shot back with a birdie on the par-4 eighth in making the turn at even-par 36. He was still even before making three straight bogeys on Nos. 13-15, then birdied No. 16 and finished with two pars in coming back with a back-nine 38.

Hickey made the turn at two-over 38 before coming in with an even-par 36. Baldwin was four-over after five holes before playing his final 13 holes at one-under, while Coughlin made 10 pars, six bogeys and two birdies in his four-over round.
