OKLAHOMA CITY (March 7) – Central Oklahoma struggled in the cold and wind at Gaillardia Country Club Monday on the first day of the Broncho Invitational.
Caleb Kimmel was the only starter to break 80 as the Bronchos finished with a 317 total, leaving them eighth in the 14-team tournament heading into Tuesday's final round at the 7,120-yard, par-72 layout. Southwestern Christian leads with a 298, four shots ahead of Hutchinson Community College.
Kimmel led the way with a 75 that has him tied for 11th in the medalist standings. Evan Griffith and Kyle Hickey both shot 80, while Liam Coughlin had an 82 and Bennett Baldwin 86.
Central also has three players competing as individuals. Ross Taylor fired a one-over 73, while Riley Harris shot 80 and Cullen Cummings 85.
"It was a bad day for our guys and we just couldn't get anything going," head coach Derrick Thompson said. "The wind was relentless. Ross and Caleb both played well, but everyone else struggled."
Taylor made four bogeys and three birdies in his one-over round. Kimmel opened the day with a birdie, then made 13 pars and four bogeys the rest of the way.
