Central Splits Final Games At Drury Classic

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (March 6) – Amelya Huggins, Shayla Harper and Terin Ritz all smacked home runs as Central Oklahoma trounced Southwest Baptist 11-3 Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Drury Classic.

The No. 13-ranked Bronchos had their 14-game winning streak snapped earlier in the day with a 3-0 loss to the host Panthers before rebounding with the run-rule romp of SBU. Central finished 3-1 in the two-day event and is now 17-3 on the season.

"We couldn't get our offense going against Drury, but I like the way we put that behind us in the second game," head coach Cody White said. "Overall it was a pretty good weekend. We're making progress, but there's still a lot of work to do."

The Bronchos managed just two hits -- singles by Harper and Shayleigh Odom -- against Drury in the opener. The Panthers scored twice in the first inning and once in the second en route to handing UCO its first shutout of the season.

Central didn't waste any time getting on the scoreboard against the Bearcats, taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the first when Brighton Gilbert walked, Tarin Dubler reached on an error and Ritz belted her third homer of the season.

SBU got two runs back in its first at bat, then tied it with a single run in the second. It stayed a 3-3 deadlock until the fifth, when the Bronchos erupted for eight runs on eight hits to turn the game into a runaway.

Jacee Minter got things going with a one-out single and UCO broke the tie on Huggins' two-out, two-run homer. Odom followed with a base hit, Korbyn Skipworth ripped an RBI double and Lexy Dobson walked to put two runners on base for Harper.

The junior slugger -- who belted a league-high 15 homers last year – went deep for the first time this season in making it 9-2. Gilbert continued the onslaught with a single before back-to-back RBI doubles by Dubler and Minter finished off the outburst.

Minter went 3-for-4 to lead an 11-hit attack, while Harper and Ritz had two hits apiece.

Isie Cox earned her first collegiate pitching win, giving up three hits and two earned runs in the first four innings. Bailey McKittrick put SBU down in order in the fifth in her first action after being sidelined by off-season surgery.

UCO begins defense of its Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association title this weekend, hosting Emporia State and Washburn for doubleheaders Friday and Saturday.
