Dobson Sparks Bronchos At Drury Classic

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (March 5) – Hitting perfection by Lexy Dobson led No. 13-ranked Central Oklahoma to a pair of wins on the first day of the Drury Classic Saturday.

The senior standout finished 6-for-6 with six runs batted in on the day, collecting three hits and three RBI in both a 10-1 first-game drubbing of Southwest Baptist and in a tight 4-2 second-game victory over the host Panthers.

The Bronchos stretched their winning streak to 14 in a row with a sweep, improving to 16-2 on the season. UCO will meet the same two teams Sunday, taking on DU at 11 a.m. and SBU at 1 p.m.

"We came out with a couple of good wins today," head coach Cody White said. "Lexy really carried us offensively, especially in the second game against Drury. Hopefully we can come back with the same intensity tomorrow and keep it going."

The Bronchos had a season-high 15 hits in the five-inning run-rule rout of SBU in the opener.

All nine starters had at least one hit, with Brighton Gilbert, Tarin Dubler and Shayla Harper collecting two apiece. Terin Ritz earned the pitching win, giving up two hits in the first four innings before Isie Cox threw a 1-2-3 fifth to close out the game.

Central took a 1-0 lead in the second when Shayleigh Odom tripled and came home on Dubler's two-out single. Ritz drew a bases-loaded walk and Amelya Huggins followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.

SBU scored its lone run in the bottom of the third and then the Bronchos broke the game open with a seven-run volley in the top of the fourth.

Dubler had a two-run double and Dobson a two-RBI single – her second hit of the inning – to key the big uprising. UCO also go run-scoring hits from Huggins, Harper and Jacee Minter in grabbing a commanding 10-1 lead.

The Bearcats didn't threaten in their final two at bats as the Bronchos wrapped up the easy win.

It wasn't so easy in the second contest, but the Bronchos still came out on top,

Drury took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but Central went ahead to stay in the top of the second with a pair of runs.

Ritz was hit by pitch with one out, then Huggins and Odom drew back-to-back two-out walks to load the bases for Dobson, who delivered with a two-run single to right field.

Brighton Gilbert's RBI groundout in the top of the fourth pushed the lead to 3-1, but the Panthers got a run back in the bottom of that frame to make it 3-2.

UCO added an insurance run in the sixth. Odom reached on an error to start the inning, went to second on Korbyn Skipworth's sacrifice bunt and trotted home on Dobson's single down the right field line.

SBU couldn't threaten against Kylee Lynch in the final two innings as the sophomore left-hander finished off the complete-game pitching win. Lynch gave up six hits while striking out six and walking two in improving to 10-0.

Dobson had three of UCO's six hits.
