Bronchos Breeze By Bearcats

EDMOND (March 25) – A trio of Central Oklahoma pitchers allowed a combined four runs and eight hits as the No. 19-ranked Bronchos breezed to a doubleheader sweep of Northwest Missouri Friday afternoon at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.

UCO battered the Bearcats for 22 hits in claiming 8-2 and 12-2 victories, improving to 27-5 on the season and 6-0 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action. The Bronchos are back home Saturday to face league foe Missouri Western in a 12 p.m. twinbill.

Kylee Lynch and Bailey McKittrick teamed up for a four-hitter in the first-game win before Isie Cox gave up four hits in the nightcap that ended after five innings on the eight-run rule.

"We had a good all-around effort today," head coach Cody White said. "I thought our pitching staff really threw well and our offense put together some big innings that carried us. It's a good start to the weekend, but we have two big games tomorrow against a Missouri Western team that's playing well."

Central had seven-run outbursts early in each game to grab quick control.

The big volley in the opener came in the second inning after NWMSU had scored an unearned run in the top half to take a 1-0 lead. And the Bronchos scored all seven runs with two outs, ripping off seven consecutive hits.

Lexy Dobson got UCO on the scoreboard with a three-run inside-the-park homer, racing around the bases after her line drive to right field bounced into the corner. Amelya Huggins added a two-run double, while Tarin Dubler and Jacee Minter had RBI singles.

The Bronchos made it 8-1 in the fifth when Dobson hit a one-out triple to right-center and scored on Brighton Gilbert's two-out single up the middle. The Bearcats scored their final run in the top of the seventh.

Gilbert, Dubler, Huggins and Dobson had two hits apiece to lead a 13-hit attack, with Dobson also adding a highlight-reel diving catch from her center field post.

Lynch earned the pitching win, giving up two hits and one unearned run in five innings. She struck out one, walked one and threw just 44 pitches in improving to 14-0 on the season.

McKittrick went the final two innings, allowing two hits and one run.

The Bronchos didn't waste time in the second game, unleashing their seven-run burst in the first inning.

Shayla Harper keyed the uprising with a pair of triples – tying a single-game school record in the process. The speedy junior led off the inning with a three-bagger to right-center, then had a three-run triple in her second at bat of the inning.

Minter added a two-run double and UCO scored two more runs on errors to make it 7-0.

It became a 9-0 cushion in the second. Minter was hit by pitch to open the frame and Huggins followed with a massive drive over the center field wall for her eighth homer of the season.

NWMSU scored its only two runs in the top of the third and Central answered with three in its half, getting RBI singles from Huggins and Korbyn Skipworth along with a Dobson sacrifice fly.

That made it 12-2 and Cox cruised through the final two innings to earn the complete-game victory. The sophomore gave up four hits while walking two and striking out one in moving to 7-3.

Harper, Huggins and Skipworth had two hits apiece in leading UCO's nine-hit assault.
