Dobson Hit Helps UCO Gain Split

PITTSBURG, Kan. (March 20) – Lexy Dobson's run-scoring single in the top of the sixth inning broke a 3-3 deadlock and propelled Central Oklahoma to a 6-3 victory over Sioux Falls Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Fairfield Inn and Suites Classic.

The No. 8-ranked Bronchos split two games for the second straight day, dropping a 3-0 decision to No. 21 Minnesota State-Mankato before bouncing back to beat the Cougars.

UCO, now 25-5 on the season, returns to Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play this weekend with back-to-back home doubleheaders against Northwest Missouri and Missouri Western.

"We struggled to get our offense going today, especially in the first game," head coach Cody White said. "Mankato's pitcher really did a good job keeping us off-balance and we didn't do much against Sioux Falls until the final few innings."

The Bronchos managed just two hits and struck out 16 times against Mankato ace Mackenzie Ward in suffering a rare shutout to open the day, then scored only one unearned run in the first four innings of the USF contest.

RBI base hits by Brighton Gilbert and Tarin Dubler in the top of the fifth gave UCO a 3-1 lead, but the Cougars came back with two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning to tie it.

Central moved in front to stay in the sixth on Dobson's bases-loaded single that plated Korbyn Skipworth, who walked to start the inning. The Bronchos added two insurance runs in the seventh, with Dubler scoring on an error after leading off with a single and Amelya Huggins adding an RBI single.

USF threatened in the bottom of the seventh after putting two runners on with one out, but UCO escaped the jam.

The Bronchos collected nine of their 12 hits in the final three innings. Dobson, Dubler, Jacee Minter and Shayleigh Odom had two hits apiece to lead the way.

Bailey McKittrick started in the circle and gave up just one run in the first four innings before leaving with the game tied. Isie Cox came on to pitch the final three frames and ended up getting the win.
