Bronchos Split In Kansas

PITTSBURG, Kan. (March 19) – Isie Cox threw a one-hit shutout as No. 8-ranked Central Oklahoma split a pair of games in the rescheduled Fairfield Inn and Suites Classic Saturday afternoon.

Cox's pitching gem along with a trio of home runs led the Bronchos to an 8-0 run-rule romp over the Cougars to open the day before UCO dropped a 6-5 extra-inning decision to No. 21 Minnesota State-Mankato in the second contest.

Central, now 24-4, meets both teams again Sunday to close out the two-day event that was originally set to be played in St. Joseph, Mo. before weather changes altered the schedule.

"I was really proud of the way Isie pitched in the first game," head coach Cody White said. "We had some big hits and came out with a good win. We got in a big hole against Mankato and did a nice job coming back, but couldn't quite finish the job."

The Bronchos jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first inning of the opener against USF, getting a lead-off solo homer from Shayla Harper and a three-run shot from Amelya Huggins.

Lexy Dobson added a solo blast in the second to push the lead to 5-0 and Harper's two-run single highlighted a three-run fourth inning to make it 8-0.

Cox gave up a lone single in the first inning and walked one in claiming the complete-game win.

UCO fell behind 5-1 in the second inning of second game, with the lone score coming on Huggins' second-inning homer.

Brighton Gilbert's RBI single and Tarin Dubler's run-scoring triple pulled the Bronchos within 5-3 in the third. Korbyn Skipworth came through with an RBI triple in the sixth and Jacee Minter's run-scoring single in the seventh tied it.

The international tiebreaker started in the top of the eighth and UCO failed to score before Mavericks came through with a run in the bottom of the inning to claim the win.
