No. 3 UCO Cruises In Season Opener

EDMOND – No. 3 Central Oklahoma opened the 2022 season Sunday morning with a 6-1 victory over UT-Tyler at Oak Tree Tennis Center.
 
Central Oklahoma swept the doubles matches to earn the first point before winning 5 of 6 singles battles earn the victory.
 
"We played great today," UCO head women's tennis coach Joe Vann said. "We will keep working to clean up the little things, but it was a great season opener today. We had a lot of great support too out at Oak Tree and we are now looking forward to more of the same against Dallas Baptist next weekend."
 
Adel-Byanu Abidullina and Tizia Brocks played No. 2 doubles for the Bronchos on Sunday and the duo raced to a 6-1 victory. Central's top-ranked dynamic duo of Mae Canete and Christine Canete also won 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. Grace Chadick and Nikki Boyar won 7-5 at No. 3 doubles to make it a clean sweep for the Bronchos.
 
After a brief pause and a turn to singles competition, it was more dominating play by UCO.
 
Christine was the first to finish with a 6-0, 6-0 drubbing at No. 2 singles. She gave UCO a 2-0 lead in the match. Abidullina followed with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles to make it 3-0, Central.
 
Then Mae finished off a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles to make it 4-0 and clinch the match for the Bronchos.
 
UT-Tyler scored its only point with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles over Chadick to make it 4-1, but UCO responded with two more wins on the backend.
 
Brocks won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 singles and Boyar picked up a win at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 3-6 (10-6).
 
Central Oklahoma is ranked No. 3 in the country and has half of its team nationally ranked individually. The Bronchos are playing at home for the entire month of February and will continue that homestand Saturday, Feb. 12 against Dallas Baptist.
