Bronchos Dominate At Drury Open

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (Dec. 2) – Studd Morris scored five bonus-point wins in capturing the 125-pound title to lead a host of Central Oklahoma champions at the Drury Open Saturday.

The No. 3-ranked Bronchos dominated the one-day tournament, winning six weights and finishing runner-up at two others. Thirteen of UCO's main wrestlers finished in the top three, with that group going 56-8 with 38 bonus-point wins on the day.

Joining Morris atop the podium was 149 Brik Filippo, 174 Tre'Vaughn Craig, 197 Dalton Abney and Hvy Shawn Streck, while Nate Keim and Ryder Ramsey shared the 141 title. Anthony DesVigne was runner-up to Craig at 174, while 157 Gabe Johnson also came in second.

Four individuals had shared third-place finishes – 125 Garrett Steidley with redshirting teammate Guy Clevenger, 149 Garrett Messimore with redshirt Bam West and heavyweights Braden Morgan and Christian Arriola. Redshirt 197 Seth Sarasua placed fourth.

"We had a pretty good day and our guys got a lot mat time, which they needed," head coach Todd Steidley said. "We wrestled pretty well overall, but there's still a lot of room for growth and improvement."

Morris marched into the finals with a first-period fall and three major decisions, outscoring those three opponents a combined 43-13. The seventh-ranked junior capped off his perfect 5-0 day with a fourth straight major decision, this one a 12-4 rout.

Ramsey overwhelmed four opponents in making the finals opposite Keim, scoring four falls. Three of those came in the first period, including one in just eight seconds.

The 12th-ranked Keim had a pair of falls, a major decision and tight 5-4 second-round victory in making the finals.

Filippo notched three bonus-point wins and a tough 6-4 victory over redshirting teammate Bam West in making the finals. The ninth-rated senior trimmed Oklahoma State's Cutter Sheets 6-5 for the gold medal.

Craig was impressive in making his season debut, rolling into the finals with three bonus wins. He opened with a 15-0 technical fall after a first-round bye, then routed 10th-ranked Austin Morgan of Central Missouri 10-2 before scoring a 23-second fall in the semifinals.

The senior got past junior teammate DesVigne 3-2 in the title bout.

Abney wasn't tested in the first four matches in his return to the mat after a three-week layoff. The top-ranked junior star had three first-period falls and a 16-1 technical fall in rolling into the finals before edging Ibrahim Ameer of Count County 1-0 in running his winning streak to 33 in a row.

Streck, competing for the first time after recovering from off-season surgery, went 5-0 on the day. The third-ranked junior had a pair of falls, a major decision and 6-2 win in making the finals, where he blitzed Central Methodist's Brendon Shelton 20-5.

Johnson followed a first-round bye with a narrow 5-4 victory over Oklahoma State's Luke Mechlen, then had a 16-0 technical fall and 10-7 triumph in advancing to the title bout. He fell to OSU's Daniel Manibog 7-4 in the finals.

DesVigne also had no trouble making the finals, following an opening-round bye with 17-0 and 18-0 technical falls before edging OSU's Benjamin Mower 6-3 in the semis.

UCO returns to action Friday when it travels to Wichita, Kan. to open Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association against Newman.
