Bronchos Host Cameron Tuesday

Central Oklahoma continues a season-opening homestand Tuesday when the Bronchos host intrastate rival Cameron for a 5:30 p.m. contest at Hamilton Field House.

UCO started the 2022-23 campaign last weekend with a pair of routs, while the Aggies from Lawton are 2-1.

It will be a reunion of sorts for first-year head coach Emma Andrews, who came to the Bronchos last May after spending six seasons at the Cameron helm.

"This will be a tough game in a lot of ways," Andrews said. "I recruited and coached several of their players and Jeff (CU head coach Mahoney) was my assistant for three years, so I know what they're capable of.

"I can promise you that they're going to be ready to play and we're going to have to match their intensity. It should be a great game."

UCO hosts Southern Nazarene at 1:30 p.m. Saturday to end its homestand. The Bronchos open Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play Dec. 1 at Central Missouri.

ABOUT THE BRONCHOS: UCO rolled over Missouri S&T (99-84) and Oklahoma Christian (78-64) last weekend to get off to a 2-0 start.

Junior Alayzha Knapp and senior Brooke Rayner averaged 23.0 points apiece in the two games to lead the Bronchos.

Knapp scored a career-high 22 points in the opener against S&T, then bettered that the next night with 24 in the romp over OC. Rayner equaled Knapp in both games, with her 24 against the Eagles a career high.

Knapp is shooting 57.6 percent (19-of-33) from the field and has made 3-of-4 attempts from 3-point range after not taking a shot beyond the arc in 30 games last season. She also has five blocks and four steals.

Rayner shot 57.1 percent (16-of-28) from the field in the opening weekend, including 60.0 percent (6-of-10 from long range. The senior sharpshooter also made 8-of-9 free throws (88.9 percent) and dished out 11 assists.

Sophomore Karly Wadsworth is also averaging in double figures with 10.5 points a game.

Ten players have scored for the Bronchos, who shot 50.4 percent from the field in their first two games.

The defense was also strong last weekend as the Bronchos limited their first two opponents to 36.7-percent shooting while forcing 41 turnovers.

ABOUT THE AGGIES: Cameron split two games in Colorado to open the season before earning a 73-71 win over Harding last week in its home opener.

Alena Wilson averages 17.3 points and 8.0 rebounds a game to lead the Aggies. Korie Allensworth adds 12.3 points and 4.0 rebounds, while Karley Miller chips in 8.3 points a contest.

CU returned four players from last year's 17-11 team.

ABOUT THE SERIES: UCO owns a 47-30 lead in the rivalry and has won the last 16 meetings with the Aggies.

The Bronchos pulled out a 65-63 win in Lawton last year on Kelsey Johnson's turnaround jumper at the buzzer.
