UCO 8th In Tulsa Cup

BROKEN ARROW, Okla. (Oct. 24) – Central Oklahoma is in eighth place after first-day play at the rain-plagued Tulsa Cup.

Thirty-six holes were scheduled, but the 17-team field managed to finish just 18 after a two-hour delay midway through the first round. The tournament will wrap up with 18 holes Tuesday.

It's the last tournament of the fall season for the Bronchos, who finished with a 305 total at the 6,888-yard, par-72 The Club at Indian Springs. Henderson State leads the way after an opening 291, followed by Southern Arkansas (292), Southwestern Oklahoma (296) and Northeastern State (299).

Caleb Kimmel's two-over-par 74 led the way for UCO, with Ross Taylor a stroke behind. Evan Griffith added a 76, while Carson Blaser and Bennett Baldwin both shot 80. Riley Harris shot 79 competing as an individual.

"It was a long, hard day," head coach Derrick Thompson said. "We didn't play we're capable of, but hopefully we come back tomorrow and finish strong."

Kimmel started play on No. 8 and opened with three pars and a bogey before making two birdies in a three-hole stretch to drop to one-under. He offset another bogey with a birdie on the par-3 16th to stay there and then ripped off four straight pars before making three bogeys in his last five holes.

The junior is tied for 12th in the individual standings with the 74.

Taylor was three-over after nine holes, then played his last nine at even-par in coming in with the 75 that has him tied for 20th. Griffith played his last 11 holes at even-par after going four-over in the first seven.
