Tennis Duo Falls In National Semifinals

ROME, Ga. – Nikki Boyar's and Blythe Buntrock's run in the ITA Cup came to an end Saturday with the University of Central Oklahoma doubles team losing in the national semifinals.

Boyar and Buntrock lost 6-1, 6-3 to Madison Kane and Eleanora Liga of Azusa Pacific (Calif.) on Saturday.
 
"Blythe and Nikki had a great Fall," UCO head women's tennis coach Joe Vann said. "They really stepped up this individual season and showed the nation that UCO is still a powerhouse in tennis. They represented themselves, our school and our team with class."
 
Boyar and Buntrock won five matches two weeks in Edmond to win the ITA Central Region title and won two more in Rome to reach the national semifinals.
 
"They had a fantastic run through our regional tournament and made a great push here at nationals," Vann said. "Blythe and Nikki put it all on the line and I couldn't be more proud of their commitment, leadership, and teamwork on the court. We are looking forward to getting back to campus and getting back to work to get ready for the indoor national championship in February."
 
Boyar and Buntrock beat Indiana's (Pa.) Katy Graydon and Lydia Vlachou on Thursday afternoon in the Round of 16, earning a big comeback win. The Broncho duo dropped the first set 6-4 and then won the second in a tiebreaker to even the match. Boyar and Buntrock won 7-6 (7-4). In the third set, UCO won 10-5 to clinch the match.
 
In Friday's national quarterfinal match, Boyar and Buntrock won in straight sets over Flagler's Luisa Hrda and Eryka Kruk. UCO got a 6-4, 7-5 win to reach the national semifinals.
 
Boyar and Buntrock wrapped up their Fall season with a 10-1 doubles record. The duo has a 43-13 career record playing together in the Bronze & Blue.
